Wikinews interviews Professor Gigi Foster about pandemic control in Australia

Wednesday, August 11, 2021

On July 22, Wikinews interviewed Professor Gigi Foster of School of Economics at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia about measures that the government took to stop the spread of COVID-19, a virus that caused what the World Health Organization declared a pandemic last year.

Professor Foster is on faculty with the School of Economics at the University of New South Wales. She wrote an Op-Ed in the Sydney Morning Herald, arguing for a case against the so-called “lockdowns” – measures which the state governments in Australia were implementing to stop the spread of COVID-19. These measures included things like limiting the size of gatherings, directing certain business types such as gyms to close or operate at reduced capacity, limiting where people may travel and restricting residents to only leaving their home if they have a reasonable excuse to do so.

In New South Wales, these restrictions were implemented as Public Health Orders, signed by Brad Hazzard, the Minister for Health and Medical Research. Mr Brad Hazzard has authority make these Orders under the Public Health Act 2010, section 7.

Wikinews reached out to Professor Gigi Foster, asking for comment.

The interview was conducted amid an outbreak of COVID-19 in New South Wales, that has resulted in an increase of restrictions from June 26. At the day of interview, residents were legally allowed to go outdoors only for essential shopping, medical care, and exercise, in groups of no more than two people unless of a common household. On July 28, authorities extended these restrictions until the end of August.

The current outbreak of the COVID-19 Delta strain started from ‘patient zero’, reportedly a driver, which includes transporting international flight crew, as NSW Health wrote on June 16. A week later, on June 24, the driver commented that he thought that he caught the virus from a local cafe, where another patron was visibly unwell.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has said that “our mission is to allow our citizens to live as safely and freely as possible”, having announced that only authorized workers — people whose occupation is essential — could leave home in selected higher risk regions in south-west of Sydney until July 30.

Work of the construction industry has been stopped for several days, and resumed this week with requirement that the construction workers get tested for COVID-19 regularly.

Important Questions To Ask A Laptop Repair Service Provider

byAlma Abell

Computer repair is just like being a physician as you cannot overlook the importance of hiring a professional to take care of your computer repair work. While any due diligence will certainly translate into a higher cost, as your machine might end up being permanently damaged during the repair process; costing you to buy a new machine in the process. That is why you need to extra caution when hiring a laptop repair service in Minneapolis MN.

Here are important questions that you need to ask when hiring the provider of a laptop repair service in Minneapolis MN.

What is the company’s experience?

This is a big pointer to whether the company is credible or not. If the company is credible, it means that they provide an excellent service. If they did not provide quality and professional service, they might not have stood the competition for such a long time. However, if you are dealing with a recently established company, then you might want to look into the reviews much more than you would the time in business.

What laptop repair services do they offer, and what is the cost of each?

There are several types of computer repair services, with each requiring difference set of skills and specialty. Be sure to find out what the company specializes in. For instance, if your laptop is experiencing software problems, then you need to find a company that strictly specializes in software repair services such as virus removal and data recovery. The same applies when your laptop has electrical issues. While at this, be sure to find out the cost of the service.

Other than the quoted fee, are there going to be any additional cost?

Alongside the quoted fee, some companies might surprise you with additional charges at the end of the service. That is why you need to discuss everything before signing any contract with the laptop repair company. During the initial meeting, the repair company should be able to tell if the work is going to involve entirely repair or if there is going to be any kind of replacement involved. You need all these information upfront.

Are they certified to carry out computer repair work?

It is important that you do business with a computer repair company that is licensed to provide this kind of service in your area, Minneapolis. Some companies might lure you with their low cost for lack of a license. However, this can turn out to be very costly when the repair work goes wrong and you are seeking legal redress. It is equally important that you check the expiry date of the company’s certificate of service.

Asking these among other questions will certainly help you get a good laptop repair service in Minneapolis MN for your laptop repair needs.

Thought-controlled cybernetic arms demonstrated

Friday, September 15, 2006

Jesse Sullivan has two cybernetic arms, after electrical burns suffered while working as an electrical utility lineman resulted in amputation of both his arms at the shoulder. Claudia Mitchell has a similar cybernetic left arm, after a motorcycle accident resulted in amputation. Sullivan and Mitchell shook hands with these thought-controlled prosthetic arms at an event staged Thursday in Washington, D.C. by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and Center for Artificial Limbs at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Unlike traditional prosthetic limbs, these are actuated through muscle reinnervation; nerves are grafted onto specific muscles, controlling their contraction, which are then detected by electrode sensors and control the prosthetic limb. “Basically it is connecting the dots. Finding the nerves. We have to free the nerves and see how far they reach,” says Dr. Todd Kuiken, developer of the prostheses and director of neuroengineering at the Rehabilitation Institute. By this chain of communication the prostheses utilize thought-controlled biomechanics. According to Sullivan, “When I use the new prosthesis I just do things. I don’t have to think about it … I do all the yard work. I take out the garbage.”

DARPA, as an agency of the United States Department of Defense, seeks to eventually provide such prostheses for soldiers losing their organic limbs in combat. “We’re excited about collaborating with the military,” said Kuiken. 411 U.S. troops in Iraq and 37 in Afghanistan have had wounds that cost them at least one limb according to the Army Medical Command.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

North America’s largest outdoor dog festival came back to Toronto last weekend for its fifth year. It ran from the 9th of June to the 10th of June at Toronto’s historical St. Lawrence Market. A Wikinews reporter was there on Sunday to report on some of the events that happened on the last day.

The “Woofstock” dog festival attracted as many as 140,000 people with their dogs. The festival had tons of accessories, sold under tents, to buy for dogs; food, toys, designer clothes, and more. About 400 vendors and exhibitors were there to promote their products, which also gave private dog companies or groups a chance to show their new products. The local SPCA and some animal rescues were under tents answering questions from visitors. While walking, all visitors could see the CN Tower and other very tall buildings.

One of the local TV stations, Citytv, was there. They hosted a live event at the show which was broadcast on TV. People came up on the stage and asked questions regarding their dogs and the host and co-host answered them.

A man, who called himself the “Chalk Master”, drew two pictures on pavement with chalk. He did it for free but donations were welcome. One was a picture of a girl’s head beside a dog’s head, and another with a wolf.

“Hello Humans. I’ve been invited here to provide your eyeball(s), with some pretty colours. I don’t get paid as I work this weekend strictly for tips… so, if you like what you see please make a DONATION. If you don’t like it simply reach into the pocket of the person next to you and give me their money. CHALK MASTER.”

A contest called “Canada’s top dog” had its own tent with a professional photographer taking pictures of dogs behind a white screen; the winning photo is to be published on the cover of “Puppy and dog basics” magazine.

Large “Gourmet” dog bones were also served from a cart and table.

Next year’s festival is expected to be bigger and better with even more attractions.

How Do Thieves Gauge Whether Your House Makes A Good Target

By Richard Armen

The old saying ‘you can’t judge a book by its cover,’ may be true, but it isn’t necessarily something that applies to every situation. Just as we often judge individuals by the way that they look, thieves also judge homes based on the way that they look from the street. Many thieves go about ‘casing’ homes in order to figure out: 1) if a home is worth breaking into, 2) how easy it would be to break into, 3) whether or not they can get away without being seen.

If you watch the nature channel, you’ve undoubtedly seen lions and tigers stalking through the jungle, eyeing their prey. Thieves aren’t much different. They stalk through neighborhoods and communities in search of prey. So what exactly are they looking for? Ideally, they’re looking for a property that tells them that there are things of value inside. In addition to that, they are also looking for a property that looks easy to break into. Thieves know that homes that look like they contain valuable possessions often mean that the owners have taken security precautions, which can present more of a challenge.

So, how do thieves gauge whether your house makes a good target, just from driving past it? One of the first things they look for is how well the home has been cared for. They use the ‘broken window theory’: if there is a broken window on a home or building, then the building must not be cared for. Likewise, if a home is in even a moderate state of disrepair, it announces to thieves that there is probably very little security in place. For that matter, the front door may not even be locked. Hence, it’s probably worth breaking into the home just in case there’s something of value inside, even if the thief doesn’t think the homeowners are wealthy people.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, too much security may attract the wrong kind of attention as well. While it’s certainly important to protect your home – even if you think you don’t own anything worth stealing – is there such a thing as too much security? A multitude of high-tech cameras, plus burglar bars and a barking dog, combine to form an interesting picture of the home. Together, they work as a sort of announcement that there is something of value inside. Though all of these security measures are enough to deter an opportunistic thief, they may make your home more attractive to a professional thief looking for a big payout.

So what’s the best solution? Keep your home in repair, promptly replacing anything that breaks or becomes worn out. Tend to your yard and pay attention to how your home looks to the neighbors. A well lit home also prevents theft, because it increases the chances that the thief will be seen breaking in. Install appropriate security devices around the home, but don’t make it seem as though you are trying to build a maximum-security prison.
