NATO oil tanker torched in Pakistan

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Militants in north-west Pakistan blew up a fuel tanker carrying supplies to NATO forces in Afghanistan on Monday. More than ten armed men shot at the tanker and fired a rocket at the vehicle outside Peshawar city, and the driver and a passenger were injured in the attack, although no loss of life is reported.

Head of the north-western city’s administration, Sahibzada Anees, said “About ten armed people fired at a tanker carrying petrol for NATO forces and later lobbed a rocket at the vehicle, which set alight some 78,000 litres (17,000 gallons) of fuel”.

According to witnesses, the tanker was quickly in flames. The residents of the areas were successfully rescued by police and fire fighters and the blaze was brought under control. Police have launched a search operation in nearby areas, although with no success.

Nobody has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Oil tankers and trucks bringing goods from port city of Karachi for allied forces battling the Taliban in Afghanistan have been regularly attacked. About 80% of supplies destined for the more than 113 thousand NATO troops in Afghanistan have to pass through Pakistan. The coalition forces bring 70% of supplies through Pakistan every month, from a total of two thousand truckloads.

Canadian government announces major tax reductions

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced a five-year program that could reduce taxes by a total C$60 billion.

The planned tax reduction measures include:

  • Low-end personal income tax rates would be reduced from 15.5% to 15%, taking retroactive effect to the start of 2007;
  • The basic personal exemption, the amount at which income is taxable, is raised from C$8,929 to C$9,600, also backdated to January 2007;
  • Business tax rates are expected regularly drop from the current 20.5% to 15% in 2012;
  • The Goods and Services Tax that applies to most purchases would be reduced from 6% to 5% as 2008 begins. This rate was previously reduced from 7% July 2006, shortly after Prime Minister Stephen Harper took office.

These measures will be brought before the House of Commons in Ottawa on Wednesday as a confidence motion. In Canada’s minority government situation, opposition parties could defeat these measures and likely prompt an election. However, opposition leader Stéphane Dion has expressed an unwillingness to defeat the government on this matter.

Important Tasks That You Need To Do For Estate Planning

By Andrew Declue

By definition, estate is the sum of all personal and real property owned by a person. Real property is nothing but real estate and the personal belongings or property is all that a person has other than the real estate. For example, shares, units, cars, bikes, bank accounts and so on. Estate planning is simply a procedure in which a person arranges the transfer of assets to his or her beneficiaries. In other words, it is the distribution of personal and real property to the legal heir or heirs.

Estate planning is very important and if you have personal and real property, ensure that it is done as per the legal requirements. If you dont do the estate planning properly, there are chances that there would be fights among the heirs. So, if you want to protect the needs and requirements of your loved ones, make sure that you take good interest in estate planning. There are some key things that you need to do for the estate planning. First and foremost, you need to select the beneficiaries or heirs for your personal and real property.

Then, you need to ensure that least tax is deducted during the transfer of wealth. If you get disabled, you will have to ensure that the transfer happens very smoothly. You can decide on the time of pre-distribution. It is not necessary that the transfer happens after your death. You can do the transfer of wealth when you are alive also. If you are handling a business, then you need to make preparations for the business succession.

You need to ensure that the transfer of power occurs very smoothly and to the right person. Finally, you will have to select a trustee or guardian or the executor, who will execute the plans. So, what are the main tasks allocated to the trustee or guardian or the executor. First and foremost, the trustee or guardian or the executor needs to ensure that the distribution of wealth occurs as per your wish. The trustee or guardian or the executor will also have to pay for the testamentary and funeral expenses.

In most cases, the trustee or guardian or the executor has to apply for a probate. In addition to the testamentary and the funeral expenses, the trustee or guardian or the executor has to pay all other expenses and the outstanding debts. The trustee or guardian or the executor will also have to ensure that all the life insurance coverage money is transferred to the beneficiaries.

Finally, the trustee or guardian or the executor will also have to do the filing of tax returns. Generally, people would appoint a trusted family member to do these tasks; however, these days, there are several professionals who are prepared to do these tasks at a predetermined fee. The role of a financial planner in the estate planning is also very crucial. The financial planner has to determine your financial status.

The financial planner has to gather information related to your finances. The financial planner has to draw out a plan of transfer and then implement this plan. The financial planner has to review the plan before he or she implements it. Although estate planning may appear to be a very simple task, it is not that easy and it can take even months to put up a good plan in place. If the estate planning is not executed as planned, your goals and wishes in the manner of how your wealth needs to be distributed may not be fulfilled.

If you dont select the right kind of finance planner, you may have to pay a large amount for transfer and taxes. If you dont do the estate planning properly, it is your beneficiaries who will suffer in the end or when you are not there. The estate planning involves legal procedures and this can take a very long time.

So, if you have wealth that needs to be distributed suitably, you have to ensure that the estate planning is done correctly. Make sure that you also keep all your beneficiaries or heirs informed about the estate planning so that you can resolve any conflicts when you are around. Given the current scenario, all people need to do their estate planning when they have the time to do it.

Ethics debate surrounds surgery to stunt disabled girl’s growth

Friday, January 5, 2007

An ethical controversy has surged in the United States and elsewhere around nine-year-old Ashley X (her family name has not been released). The disabled girl was operated upon at the request of her parents, to prevent her from growing, menstruating and developing breasts. The parents, who wish to remain anonymous, explain their situation on a blog entitled The “Ashley Treatment”. There have been over 1000 reactions on the blog so far.

Ashley suffers a condition termed static encephalopathy with marked global developmental deficits of unknown etiology, which means brain damage of unknown cause leading to a kind of static condition. She can make sounds, move her arms and kick her legs, but she cannot change her position, eat, walk, talk etc. Many of these children are in poor health and die young, but Ashley is in good health. For all of these functions she depends on her caregivers. Most of the day she passes watching her surrounding, lying on a pillow. Her parents call her their “Pillow Angel”, “since she is so sweet and stays right where we place her—usually on a pillow.”

Quote

Ashley can continue to delight in being held in our arms and will be moved and taken on trips more frequently and will have more exposure to activities and social gatherings.

-Ashley’s Mom and Dad

Ashley’s parents want to keep her at home and care for her themselves, and they want to guarantee their daughter’s quality of life. To this end, they say, Ashley underwent several surgical procedures and medical treatments during a period of three years. To attenuate her growth, Ashley was given high doses of the hormone estrogen. Ashley now measures 4ft 5 (1m 35cm) and weighs around 75 lbs (34 kg), which is below her expected length and weight. Her low body weight and size would improve her comfort, and at the same time facilitate the work of her caregivers.

Surgery to remove her uterus (a procedure called a hysterectomy) and breast buds were performed, so Ashley does not menstruate and will not develop breasts, both of which parents think only would cause her discomfort. Since high estrogen levels can cause menstrual bleeding and breast development, the surgery was also meant to limit these effects. She also underwent surgery to remove her appendix, because it would be difficult to diagnose appendicitis given Ashley’s low communication possibilities.

Algeria blocks internet across nation to prevent cheating in diploma exams

Saturday, June 23, 2018

In order to prevent cheating in high school diploma exams, the Algerian government ordered a series of two-hour nation-wide internet blockades, starting on Wednesday, reports from tech giant Oracle and Agence France-Presse confirmed.

Per the blockage, neither the cellular nor the wired data connections are to provide internet access during the exam hours. Social networking website Facebook has been blocked for the entire period. More than 500 thousand students had to appear for re-examination in June 2016 after question papers were leaked on Facebook. During the re-examinations, there were partial bans on Facebook and Twitter, and during that month, multiple employees working at the education ministry and the exam printers were arrested on suspicion of leaking the exams.

CCTV cameras have been installed at the locations where the exam question papers are printed, and metal detectors have been installed in over 2000 exam centres. According to various reports, around 700 thousand students are due to take the exams, whose results are expected to be declared a month later from July 22. Electronic gadgets are banned from the exam centres.

National education minister Nouria Benghabrit said the decision for the nation-wide blockade was “not comfortable” for the ministry, but it “should not passively stand in front of such a possible leak.” According to internet service provider Algérie Télécom, the move was “aimed at ensuring the high school diploma tests run smoothly.”

Other countries including India and Iraq also have a record of using internet blackouts as preventative measures against cheating during exams.
