Little Known Stress Management Tips &Amp; Techniques: How To Relax More &Amp; Worry Less

By Stephen Rhodes

What is Stress?

To understand the need for stress management, we must first understand stress. When a person is in danger, the body reacts, preparing to defend itself. The heart rate increases, blood pressure climbs higher, breathing becomes faster and blood flows to the muscles. This is great if a fierce dog is chasing you, because it gives you additional energy to get out of harm’s way. Unfortunately, the body reacts in the same way in response to daily problems and changes and over time this causes issues. Your body is ready to flee, but you don’t need an extra spurt of speed. With no way to release this additional energy, you become nervous, anxious and worried. This is called stress.

Physical issues such as an illness, lack of sleep or eating poorly can cause stress. Stress can also be caused by mental pressures like worrying about work or a death in the family. Major life changes can also cause stress. Not only negative changes such as being laid off from a job, but changes that are considered positive as well, such as a marriage or a promotion at work can result in stress.

What Problems are Associated with Stress?

Stress management can help with the physical effects of stress. Stress can cause a number of health problems and can make existing problems worse. Fatigue, back pain, depression, high blood pressure, insomnia, headaches and constipation are just some of the signs of stress.

Stress Management Techniques

Stress management is the process of dealing with stress and lessening its negative effects.

To effectively deal with stress, it is necessary to sense when you are feeling stress. Next, you must determine what is causing the stress. This will be different for each individual. For example, one person might consider the daily commute a great time to wind down from work and listen to relaxing music in the car, while another finds the rush hour traffic incredibly stressful.

Once you have recognized the cause of the stress, see if you can get away from it or avoid it completely. If that is not possible, consider ways to lessen your exposure to the stressor. For example, can you spend less time engaging in a stressful activity? Can you limit the activity to certain days?

Think about your emotional reaction to stress. Do you try to perform every task perfectly? Are you trying to keep everyone happy? These attitudes are bound to cause stress when you fail to live up to your own expectations. In the name of stress management, take it easier on yourself, ask for help if you need it and recognize that no one is perfect.

Exercising regularly is a great stress management technique. The physical activity releases pent-up energy and distracts you from your anxiety, helping you to relax.

Other Stress Management Tips

– Get plenty of sleep every night

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Why A Lot More People Are Including Glucomannan Into Their Eating Plans

by

Claire Winters

Glucomannan is a naturally occurring dietary fiber source that will offer many benefits to those who include it in their meal plans. Several recent and ongoing scientific studies have investigated this dietary components effectiveness toward improving complications of digestion and weight gain and the results of these studies have been encouraging. In trials, there has been positive results when using glucomannan. Due to its physical and chemical properties, this fiber source is commonly utilized in the food industry. This fiber is currently used as food additive and is already being used as an emulsifier and component that gives foods a thicker consistency without adding calories. Its chemical and biological arrangement make it easy on the body and offer potential benefits and relief to those who are serious about their digestive health, cholesterol level, and weight maintenance.

There are two ways for glucomannan to be used when incorporating it to a dietary regimen. One choice is to take it as a nutritional supplement, as a powder or pre-formed tablet, and the other solution is to consume it through the culinary preparation and use of sharitaki noodles. There are challenges of convenience that should be taken into consideration, but also the opportunities presented by each of these options should not be ignored.

Consumed in tablet form or as a powder, this naturally occurring fiber may be introduced into a persons diet in a way that is straightforward to measure and manage. These supplements can be purchased in specialty stores who supply dietary alternatives for healthier living. It needs to be noted that tablets can expand once they are swallowed and that this can have physical implications within the body as the fiber is water soluble. For some who choose to consume it as a supplement, it may be better to go with a powder to be mixed in as an ingredient or to crush tablets prior to taking them. While there are important health benefits associated with this health supplement, it is important to always remember the appropriate administration, including levels, frequency, and timing.

For those who do not wish to take the health supplement, there is always the use of sharitaki noodles which the fiber is incorporated into. They are noodles which are prepared from konjac, the natural plant source of glucomannan. There are tremendous advantages to including this dietary fiber into a diet through the use of the noodles even though the dietary supplements can offer some of the benefits. Specialty supplement retailers first of all are not required, nor would you have to take a tablet regularly. One can prepare new dishes that will naturally add the benefits while allowing a variety of healthy dishes to be prepared. The noodles prove to be quite versatile as they readily accept the spices and flavors that are chosen and provides a low calorie alternative to regular noodles.

While there could be instances where a supplement is suitable, it is often better to get ones dietary needs met directly from foods that satisfy these necessities. When it comes to this particular dietary fiber a fantastic option exists that can be incorporated naturally into ones diet. The noodles deliver the same benefits as isolated dietary supplements, but provide the satisfaction of knowing that one is supporting ones health through the choices that one is making with food options. The noodles themselves open up new avenues for creativity and variation and are sure to find a place on your personal menu. Delectable recipes are being discovered every day as more and more consumers are incorporating these noodles into their diet programs.

Calls for bottled water bans grow in Canada

Saturday, August 23, 2008

London, Ontario is the latest in a string of Canadian cities to have acted on increasing public demand to ban bottled water. On Monday, the decision to eliminate bottled water sales in city-run facilities was passed by London’s city council with a vote of 15-3 in favour. The move was driven by a desire to reduce waste and shipping, have a lower impact on the environment and promote tap water as a cheap and safe alternative.

London’s new restrictions will be implemented over the next several months in buildings that are already equipped with water fountains. Bottled water will still be permitted at many city-run events, such as upcoming summer festivals. Privately-owned retailers will not be affected by the ban.

Other cities, such as Vancouver, Ottawa and Kitchener, that are already engaged in debate on the issue, may now be watching London carefully for how the ban plays out. Other areas have already begun to phone London with questions on the details of its new regulations. Toronto has begun taking a look at bottled water packaging as part of its waste diversion strategy, and its public school board is looking into the possibility of a total restriction on bottled water sales.

In recent years, an awareness of the energy that is required to manufacture, transport and recycle the product has spread nation-wide. Proponents of the ban point to the fact that it can produce as much as 150 times the volume of greenhouse gas when producing bottled water as compared to supplying the same volume of tap water. They also point out that the water that goes into bottled water products is not inspected as frequently as tap water in Canadian cities.

Some have taken this cause to heart more than others, such as British Environment Minister Phil Woolas, who called the use of bottled water “morally unacceptable.” Restaurant critic Giles Coren of The Times of London criticizes those who use the product as “the new smokers.”

Canada’s beverage industry has come down with criticism on the increasing opposition to bottled water. Spokesman Scott Tabachnick for Coca-Cola Co., which produces Dasani brand bottled water, commented on the convenience of the product: “It’s hard to bring your kitchen sink with you.”

It’s hard to bring your kitchen sink with you.

Vancouver City Councillor Tim Stevenson thinks that bottled water’s time has come and gone: “Bottled water companies have had a fabulous ride on an unnecessary fad.” Vancouver officials are still determining how bottled water restrictions, which have been voted for by the City Council, can be phased in.

Next month, the city is planning to initiate a marketing campaign encouraging Vancouver residents to choose tap water and to remember to carry reusable drinking containers whenever possible.

Renowned environmental activist Dr. David Suzuki has praised London’s decision, saying that it represents a turning point for people’s perceptions on the issue: “I’m really delighted that London has done this because it really makes us focus on some fundamental issues.” He hopes that someday people will “look at anyone who hauls out a bottle of water and say, ‘What the hell’s wrong with you?'”

20 wounded in explosion at Philippine karaoke bar

Saturday, February 18, 2006

An explosion has been reported near the gate of the Philippine army’s 104th Brigade headquarters, inside a karaoke bar on southern Jolo Island. At least 20 people are reported to have been injured.

According to witnesses, most of the wounded were female entertainers, and men who were drinking at the bar.

U.S troops are encamped on the grounds for joint military exercises.

Security is a major concern for these exercises, mainly due to the presence of the Abu Sayyaf guerilla group, which is related to Al-Qaeda, and is stationed about 580 miles south of Manila.

Lt. Col. Mark Zimmer, a military spokesman said that no American deaths have been reported.

Causes Of Bruxism

Causes of Bruxism

by

Londondentalstudio

Bruxism is a dental problem associated with teeth clenching or grinding, as well as the clenching of the jaws. The teeth grinding can be done unconsciously as when a person is sleeping or it can also be done during the daytime while a person is awake as a way of dealing with pent-up and/or negative emotions. Frequent and excessive grinding of the teeth can lead to pain in the jaw area, and can also result to damage to the teeth, gums, or existing dental fillings.

Stress and Teeth Grinding

One of the most common causes of bruxism is stress. People who feel stressed may unknowingly and frequently clench the jaws, as well as clench the teeth together, to deal with suppressed emotions that may not be that easy to express. Stress-related bruxism can be addressed with proper stress management techniques, including relaxation exercises to relieve the stress that the jaw muscles are subjected to when the teeth are clenched. These exercises are also beneficial in easing the emotional stress that a patient goes through, so that negative feelings can be dealt with in a more positive manner.

Behavioural therapy with the help of psychiatrists can help in determining the cause of the stress, which in turn causes the problem with bruxism. Getting to know what exactly causes or triggers stressful episodes will help solve this concern at the root cause, so that the teeth grinding or jaw clenching moments can be stopped or at the very least, decreased in frequency and intensity.

Improper Teeth Alignment

The teeth may unknowingly and frequently be clenched together when they are not in a properly aligned position. Improperly aligned teeth or malocclusion can cause the upper teeth to involuntary be clenched against the lower teeth a problem which can cause the teeth enamel to be worn with the passage of time. Dental fillings may also be worn or damaged prematurely when they are subjected to this kind of regular and intense pressure.

Bruxism caused by improper teeth alignment can be addressed with the help of mouth guards, which protect both the lower and the upper teeth by preventing them from coming into contact with one another. Orthodontic treatments, such as the use of dental braces, will help move the teeth into a more properly aligned position so they will not grind against each other in an excessive way. Dental crowns and overlays, on the other hand, are used to repair the damage to the teeth caused by too much teeth and jaw clenching.

Red Hat to move focus away from CentOS in favour of Stream; CentOS team discuss implications with Wikinews

Monday, December 14, 2020

On Tuesday, US-based software company Red Hat announced their plans to shift their focus away from CentOS in favour of CentOS Stream.

In the blog post Chris Wright, the Chief Technological Officer of Red Hat said Red Hat had informed the CentOS governing board that Red Hat was “shifting our investment fully from CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream”. At least five of the nine CentOS Governing Board listed on the project are Red Hat employees.

Started in 2004, CentOS has been a free-of-cost free/libre open source software which provided binary-code compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) — Red Hat’s GNU General Public Licensed paid operating system. CentOS was absorbed into Red Hat in 2014, with Red Hat gaining the trademark rights of “CentOS”.

Red Hat also sponsors the Fedora operating system. Red Hat even gives the software engineering interns laptops with Fedora on it. Till now, software development took place on Fedora, which was later adopted in RHEL, which the Red Hat maintained and provided support for, for those customers who had RHEL subscription. CentOS would then follow RHEL to provide the same features free of cost, but without the support.

Stream was announced in September 2019, just two months after Red Hat was acquired by IBM. CentOS Stream’s development cycle had new features added to it before the features became a part of RHEL. Stream receives more frequent updates, however, it does not follow RHEL’s release cycle.

With CentOS Stream, developments from the community and the Red Hat emplyees would take place beforehand on both Fedora, and Stream as a rolling release, before those features are absorbed into RHEL. CentOS followed the release cycle of RHEL and therefore it was a stable distribution. Features available in CentOS were tried and tested by Fedora, and then RHEL maintainers. Stream, on the other hand, has features added to it before those features become a part of RHEL. That implies Stream would be ahead of RHEL’s development, containing new features which are not yet tried and tested by RHEL developers, and not be binary code-compatible with RHEL.

Writing “The future of CentOS Linux is CentOS Stream”, Wright further wrote in the announcement, CentOS Stream “provides a platform for rapid innovation at the community level but with a stable enough base to understand production dynamics.” Wright also said, “CentOS Stream isn’t a replacement for CentOS Linux; rather, it’s a natural, inevitable next step intended to fulfill the project’s goal of furthering enterprise Linux innovation.”

Since the announcement was made, many people expressed their anger on Internet Relay Chat (IRC), Reddit and CentOS project’s mailing list. CentOS 8’s End of Life (EOL) has been moved up from May 2029 to December 31, 2021, while CentOS 7 is expected to receive maintenance updates through June 2024, outliving CentOS 8.

Gregory Kurtzer, who had started the CentOS project, announced a new operating system, Rocky Linux. Rocky Linux describes itself as “a community enterprise Operating System designed to be 100% bug-for-bug compatible with Enterprise Linux”. The project said “Rocky Linux aims to function as a downstream build as CentOS had done previously, building releases after they have been added to the upstream vendor, not before.” The project maintainers have not decided a date for when the operating system will be released.

Kurtzer explained the reason to call the OS as Rocky Linux: “Thinking back to early CentOS days… My cofounder was Rocky McGaugh. He is no longer with us, so as a H/T [hat tip] to him, who never got to see the success that CentOS came to be, I introduce to you…Rocky Linux”.

Wikinews reached out to the members of the CentOS project, Pablo Greco and Rich Bowen, to discuss this move, its implications as well as the future of CentOS. Greco is a maintainer of armhfp (32-bit processors) and is a part of the CentOS’ quality assurance team. Bowen — who unlike Greco, works for Red Hat — is the community manager of the CentOS project.

Four new breeds in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

This year, four breeds of dogs are competing for the first time in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, United States.

The new breeds making their Westminister debuts this year, are the Plott, a hunting hound originally bred by two German immigrant brothers in North Carolina; the Tibetan Mastiff, once described by Marco Polo as “tall as a donkey with a voice as powerful as that of a lion.”; the Beauceron, a herding dog originally bred to herd flocks of sheep in France, later used to sniff out landmines and send messages during the World Wars; and the Swedish Vallhund, a breed dating back to the time of the Vikings, used on farms to catch vermin, herd cattle, and as a guard dog, noted for its double coat and harness markings.

This brings the number of unique breeds competing in the famous dog show to 169.

The Plott, the Beauceron, and the Vallhund were shown on Monday. The Tibetan Mastiff will be shown tonight as part of the Working Group.
