Sphynx Skin Conditions}

Submitted by: Tom Kohr

Contact Dermatitis: Symptoms include red, itchy bumps and inflamed skin where your Sphynx cat had made contact with a chemical or another type of irritant. It can also be caused by rubber or plastic food bowels or dishes. The best way to prevent contact dermatitis is to keep Sphynx away from areas where chemicals are being used and to feed your Sphynx with glass, stainless steel, or lead-free ceramic bowels or dishes.

Feline Acne: Very common in the Sphynx breed where they form comedones (also known as blackheads) on the underside of the chin and edges of the lips. These symptoms may be associated with plastic or rubber food dishes or bowels. It is common in the Sphynx breed because of their oily skin as well. Some Sphynx owners have used Stridex pads to treat their Sphynx or small quantities of benzoyl peroxide. Please see your vet and get their advice on this before hand.

Stud Tail: This is caused by glands near the tail that excrete excessive oils. The result is a greasy, rancid-smelling waxy brown material at the top of the tail near the base. This condition is most often often found in Un-neutered males, but fixed males and females can get it as well. Treatment involves neutering your Sphynx cat, and a daily wash with an antiseborrheic shampoo. Please see your vet and get their advice on treatment.

Sunburn: The Sphynx cats are very prone to sunburn and should be kept out of direct sunlight during peek sunlight hours if possible, usually between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to reduce the risk of sunburn and minimize the long-term risk of developing skin cancers. The symptoms of too much sun usually consists of blotchy brown spots, redness or patches of red in the torso area or red bumps (heat rash) on the body. You could also put a shirt on them during thee hours as well for protection. There are safe natural oils on the market that can make for natural sun block also.

Just bear in mind that when it comes to any form of skin condition on your Sphynx cat ask yourself; What has changed recently in my household that could of caused my Sphynx to get a rash or irritated skin?

1.Diet (Food or snacks)

2. Laundry soap (Perhaps you washed their favorite blanket or bed)

3. Pet Shampoo

4. New Medication

5. Water bowl or dish

6. Cleaning chemicals (Just cleaned the tub with a cleaner where your Sphynx frequently goes to drink from the drippy tub faucet?)

Skin problems can be a serious condition and must be treated in a timely fashion. Your pet can be in pain or severe discomfort.

Always see a your vet when in question! Never diagnose your pet yourself, seek professional experience by a licensed vet!

It is always good to use a high quality pet soap on your Sphynx cat. There is a quality specific Sphynx cat shampoo “Sphynx Suds” which can be found on our website below in our “about the author” area.

Third person inner monologue is good for more than just sounding cool, say scientists

Thursday, July 27, 2017

Referring to yourself in the third person might make you less imbalanced, scientists from Michigan State University announced in this month’s issue of Scientific Reports. A dual-experiment study in which brain activity was monitored in two different ways showed that people who reflected on emotionally intense events using the third person were less subject to those emotions than those who thought of themselves in the first person.

“Essentially, we think referring to yourself in the third person leads people to think about themselves more similar to how they think about others, and you can see evidence for this in the brain,” said Michigan State University psychology professor Jason Moser. “That helps people gain a tiny bit of psychological distance from their experiences, which can often be useful for regulating emotions.”

In the first experiment, participants were asked to view disturbing pictures while their brains were being monitored using event-related potential (ERP). One group of participants was asked to think about their emotions in the first person, as in “I feel afraid,” and the other group in the third person, as in, “Mary feels afraid,” the way they would structure thoughts about a separate person. Findings showed that emotional responses dissipated faster in the third-person group, and researchers reported that using the third person to discuss emotions seemed to take more effort.

In the second experiment, participants were asked to think about painful memories from their own lives while their brains were monitored using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Again, one group of participants was asked to think of the events in the first person and the other in the third. Assessments of the participants’ brain activity indicated less emotional reaction in the third-person group.

“What’s really exciting here,” said Professor Ethan Kross, who ran the second experiment, “is that the brain data from these two complimentary experiments suggest that third-person self-talk may constitute a relatively effortless form of emotion regulation.”

The study participants were male and female college undergraduates with a median age between eighteen and nineteen years.

Gunman commits suicide at University of Texas

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

A man wearing a ski mask and carrying an assault rifle apparently killed himself in the library of the University of Texas in Austin, Texas earlier today.

The university was placed under lockdown and all classes were canceled as a result of the incident. Nobody else was hurt, but police are still looking for a possible second gunman. Art Acevedo, the chief of Austin police, said that officials are also considering the possibility of explosives left by the suspect. Armored vehicles were seen moving around the campus in response to the event, as well as {{w|SWAT team|SWAT teams}, bomb-sniffing dogs, and police helicopters. An ambulance was seen around 9:00 a.m. CDT (1400 UTC) at the University of Texas’ Perry-Castaneda library.

The school’s website included a notice this morning, which read: “The person involved in this morning’s shooting on campus has been confirmed dead on the sixth floor of the Perry-Castaneda Library from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement are searching for a second suspect. If you are off campus, STAY AWAY. If you are on campus, lock doors, do not leave your building.” The gunman was reportedly killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and no shots had been fired by law enforcement officials.

The shooter has not yet been identified, and the reason behind the incident is not yet known. Witnesses described the man as wearing a dark suit and ski mask, and carrying an assault rifle. Randall Wilhite, a professor at the university, said that he heard gunshots while going to class and saw the suspect heading toward the library just after 8:00 a.m. CDT (1300 UTC). The gunman appeared to be firing shots randomly. “When I pulled up in my car, he stood right in front of me and didn’t stop running but turned in my direction, fired three shots into the ground to the left of my car and kept running,” said Wilhite. The gunman had the chance to shoot students, added Wilhite, but he did not appear to be targeting them.

The school, which has around 50,000 students, sent out an alert around that time warning students to stay where they were. Robby Reeb, a senior at the school, said that “a guy sprinted past me screaming, ‘There’s a guy with a gun.’ I looked up and saw a man in a ski mask, wearing a suit, and carrying an assault rifle. And I called 911.”

Police said that the gun used in the shooting was an AK-47, and that they were examining two different crime scenes: where the shots were fired outside, and where the gunman was found dead in the library. Police would not say whether he was attending the university. Chief Acevado said that there were “reports of a second suspect that was wearing a beanie with a long rifle, wearing blue jeans and a black top” that “may or may not be a white male.”

Several hours after the lockdown began, police allowed students to leave the university’s campus, although nobody is still allowed to enter.

The school was also the site of a shooting spree on August 1, 1966, in which university student Charles Whitman fatally shot fourteen to sixteen people and wounded another 32 before being himself killed by law enforcement authorities; reports of the exact death toll are inconsistent. Whitman, a former U.S. Marine, shot students from the observation platform of the school’s tower. That event was the deadliest school shooting in the United States until the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre.

Eastern Conference wins 2008 NBA All-Star Game

Eastern Conference 134 128 Western Conference

The Eastern Conference defeated their Western Conference counterparts at the 2008 National Basketball Association All-Star Game held at New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana on Sunday. The final score was 134-128.

The East took an early 11 point lead in the first 5 minutes, due to an injured Kobe Bryant only playing 2 minutes before sitting on the bench for the rest of the game. “There’s one player we really, really missed, and that was Kobe,” said West coach Byron Scott. The West later reduced the lead to 2 points, but at halftime, the East led 74-65.

The West trailed by 13 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but rallied behind New Orleans point guard Chris Paul, who had seven assists in the final period. With 2:48 remaining, Brandon Roy scored a layup on an assist from Paul, giving the West a 122-119 lead, their biggest lead of the game.

The East then answered back with two three-pointers from Ray Allen, before Chris Paul tied the game with a three-pointer of his own. However, the East would then take the lead and the game with layups from Dwyane Wade and Allen, as well as a driving dunk from LeBron James. A Brandon Roy three-pointer put the game within three points with 8.7 seconds left, but 3 free throws from Ray Allen sealed the win for the East.

“The fourth quarter was crazy,” said Chris Paul. “We were down 13. We picked up the intensity. We took the lead a few times but Ray Allen was unbelievable the way he shot the ball. And that last dunk by LeBron, we had two people on him but that still wasn’t enough.”

With 27 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists, James was named the All-Star Game’s Most Valuable Player for the second time in his career. Some television commentators also considered Ray Allen a likely choice for the award, with 14 of his 28 points coming in the final 3 minutes of the game. “I think Ray Allen had a heck of a shooting night,” James said after being presented the award.

My Journey To Corfu}

Submitted by: Irina Korneeva

I always have been attracted by the idea of visiting Corfu. When i thought of this island i remembered scraps of Odyssey Travel, the fighting under the command of Admiral Ushakov, the Turkish battleships, the Republic of Venice and the Empress Sissi.

The spectacular views of the mighty monolithic bastion of Corfu and Venetian style houses is opening approaching to the island. Corfu welcome us with a lack of parking places and 35-degree heat, so we hurried to hide from the sun in the shade of the narrow streets.

Once in the old town, we forget that we are in Greece. Typical Italian courtyards with laundry hanging to dry in the sun, peeling red-orange walls and green shutters instead of Greek blue.

The tower with a clock of St. Spyridon’s church is a kind of landmark in the Old Town. St. Spyridon especially revering in Russia. Pausing at the temple, we hurried to have a look at the famous old fort. When we arrived the ticket office was closed, and they allowed us to pass with the dog and for free, and there was virtually no visitors. We were lucky enough to watch the sunset from the city walls. So, of course, we were not upset at all!

For the trip we took our Ruffy, which obviously promoted to the popularity of the breed all over the world, because where are so many tourists from all corners of the earth, and for every second one i had to explain what breed it is. Tired of impressions and Ruffy’s popularity, we moved for the night.

It turned out to be a convenient and inexpensive choice in favor of renting the house as opposed to the usual hotel rooms.

The view of the tiny island with white Blachernae monastery and even smaller nearby Mouse Island seemed to me the most Greek looking image on Corfu. There is the airport nearby the island and the planes fly directly overhead, almost touching the bell tower.

While certain regions of the island have succumbed to overdevelopment, particularly those close to Corfu Town, Corfu is large enough to make it possible to escape the crowds. Venture across cypress-studded hills to find vertiginous villages in the fertile interior, and sandy coves lapped by cobalt-blue waters.

The nature of Corfu impressing even someone who accustomed to the beauty of the Greece. Spectacular hilly terrain, small islands, the abundance of greenery and trees, azure sea … all these beauties irreversibly make working up an appetite. In Greece, I really like the way of cooking – the dishes are seasonal, always fresh, and the taste is not masked by the abundance of sauces and spices. I don’t eat meat, and i don’t feel left out in the gastronomic pleasures – seafood, vegetables, fruits, cheeses.

We stocked up some cheese on the way home in the mountain village Metsovo, famous for its cheese makers and wood craftsmen. Cobblestones, which are washing every morning, the roofs covered with flat stones, and everywhere – the smell of wood.We came back tired but full of images.

Harper snubs breakfast club visit to Ottawa; all other Canadian parties represented

Thursday, February 15, 2007

CityTV reporter Dwight Drummond accommpanied a diverse crew of Toronto public school students to Ottawa, with intentions of meeting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

While students, part of an inner-city breakfast club, had the opportunity to tour the Parliament Buildings at length, Harper stayed far away from the quick, scheduled hello. He failed to even send an MP in his place, to the event, scheduled as part of Black History Month.

Every other political party with seats in Parliament sent a representative to greet the visitors. Present was the deputy leader of the Liberal opposition party, Michael Ignatieff, and prominent NDP MP Olivia Chow, who is the wife of NDP leader Jack Layton.

While Chow and Ignatieff both hold office in Toronto, where the Citytv broadcasts to, and the Conservatives were shut out of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), even those without self-interest dropped by. Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe spoke to the students, despite the fact his party only runs candidates in Quebec.

City’s coverage of the tour focused on what the students did see, rather than what they missed.

Harper seems to have made a regular practice of ignoring or delaying scheduled visits. Canadian Auto Workers union leader Buzz Hargrove mentioned he has yet to talk to the Prime Minister. Hargrove represents over 265,000 workers in every province and territory in Canada.
