The Next Consortium of ITRI launches ‘RoboScooter’

Sunday, May 11, 2008

At the Pavilion of Taiwan Automotive Research Consortium during the AutoTronics Taipei 2008, in Taipei Time, the Next Consortium of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) unveiled a brand-new environmental-concept vehicle named “RoboScooter”. It was jointly designed by the Creativity Lab of ITRI, SYM Motors, and the Media Lab of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This announcement was approved by industrial, governmental, and academical executives, but not just in Taiwan.

The ability for R&D to manufacture the electronic vehicles and bicycles was concerning to several automobile-related industries. There was concern not only from several trade shows, but also international competitions related to the design after winning several prizes back in Taiwan to establish the industrial position and brand image of “Made in Taiwan”. Since several industries like automobile are transformed to high-value industries, “creativity” progressively became a key element before unveiling any new products.

As of this sector, Wen-jean Hsueh (ITRI Creativity Lab General Director) hoped companies could do proper transformations on its R&D nature from “Made in Taiwan” to “Created in Taiwan” for best practice. This not only echoed “OBM” theory discussed at 2007 Taiwan Brands’ Trend Forum but also blended with a key element of production – “creativity”.

On the other side of SYM Motors, to solve the transportation problem for TWTC Nangang, SYM Motors Taiwan imported manufacturing technology from Kinglong Bus Co., Ltd. to manufacture several 4th-cycle low floor buses and sell them to Chung-hsing Bus Co., Ltd. and Kwang-huang Bus Co., Ltd. In this launch, the SYM Motors Taiwan hope this vehicle is energy-efficiency, easily-parked, and has creative functions which can improve the transportation habits of individuals.

Obama lessens US ban on offshore drilling

Thursday, April 1, 2010

US President Barack Obama has announced that he will ease the country’s ban on offshore oil drilling, which has been in place since the 1980s.

According to the plan, offshore drilling would now be allowed in parts of the Atlantic, from Delaware down to 125 miles beyond the shoreline of Florida, in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

The move, however, does have some restrictions; drilling further northeast or along the West Coast is still prohibited. Contracts in Bristol Bay, Alaska were also suggested, but were scrapped due to environmental concerns.

The president remarked that he decided the move was needed to lessen the country’s need for additional energy, adding that he had studied the issue for over a year. “This is not a decision that I’ve made lightly,” he said.

“We’re announcing the expansion of offshore oil and gas exploration but in ways that balance the need to harness domestic energy resources and the need to protect America’s natural resources,” Obama continued, speaking at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. “My administration will consider potential new areas for development in the mid and south Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico.”

“Drilling alone can’t come close to meeting our long-term energy needs, and for the sake of our planet and our energy independence, we need to begin the transition to cleaner fuels now. I know that we can come together to pass comprehensive energy and climate legislation that’s going to foster new energy — new industries, create millions of new jobs, protect our planet, and help us become more energy independent.”

Obama said that the plan was partially intended to garner support from Republicans in Congress for a climate-change bill to lower greenhouse gas emissions, which has been languishing for months due to lack of support from Republicans.

Some environmental groups, however, condemned Obama’s move. Phil Radford, who is with the Greenpeace group, said that “[e]xpanding offshore drilling in areas that have been protected for decades threatens our oceans and the coastal communities that depend on them with devastating oil spills, more pollution and climate change.” Greenpeace also said that lifting the ban fuelled the US’ “addiction to oil”.

Republican leader for the House of Representatives John Boehner, meanwhile, said he agreed with lifting the ban in the Atlantic, but remarked that it “makes no sense” not to have lifted it in other areas as well. “Opening up areas off the Virginia coast to offshore production is a positive step, but keeping much of the Pacific Coast and Alaska, as well as the most promising resources off the Gulf of Mexico, under lock and key makes no sense at a time when gasoline prices are rising and Americans are asking ‘Where are the jobs?'”, he said.

“Today’s announcement is a step in the right direction, but a small one that leaves enormous amounts of American energy off limits,” said the Senate Minority leader, Republican Mitch McConnell.

According to the US Minerals Management Service, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and parts of the Atlantic south and east of the continent could contain up to 5.8 billion barrels of oil and 40.5 trillion cubic feet of gas. The West Coast, meanwhile, which remains off limits for drilling, contains 10.5 billion barrels of oil with 18 trillion cubic feet of gas.

How To Rent A Cheap Apartment In Calgary

By Michael Bryksa

FINDING AN APARTMENT STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

A time comes in our lives when we have to pack our bags, say goodbye to our parents, and move to our own living space – an apartment. I know what you’re thinking. Why an apartment? A house is a much better investment. Sure, a house is a much better investment, but these days times are tough. Money’s hard to come by. And the growing population is forcing the government to encourage people to live in tightly-packed apartments to save limited land space. So for the meantime it’s best to look for a nice apartment to live in while you’re saving up for a house in the suburbs in the future.

Here are some tips on how to find a cheap apartment in Calgary.

1. Finding an apartment is not rocket science, but you at least need to be prepared. Write an “apartment renter’s resume” which includes information such as your previous addresses and landlord contact numbers (if you’ve rented before), and work-related details including your employer, length of employment, and monthly salary. You want to look good on paper if you want to stand out from other applicants, your competition.

2. Look for apartment rentals in the most obvious places. Read the newspaper classified, campus bulletin boards, apartment rental applications, even on the Internet. In fact, especially on the Internet. Also ask your friends for rental openings in their buildings.

3. Write down and compute how much you can afford. The general rule of thumb is 30%, more or less, of your monthly take-home income.

4. Enlist the services of a rental/lease agent to help you with your search. Depending on the location in Calgary, take note this is going to cost you additional fees or a small percentage of your rent when you find an apartment through this service.

5. Are you working on a really tight budget? You could call a roommate service to help you find someone to live with and share the rental fees. They’ll ask you what qualities you like or dislike in a roommate, such as smokers and etc., so make sure you give them as much information as possible.

ADDITIONAL TIPS AND WARNINGS

In addition, here are some things you need to keep in mind when looking for an apartment.

— Some apartment buildings allow pets, some don’t. If the landlord allows you to keep your pet don’t be surprised if you have to pay extra for it.

— It’s important to put in writing how soon you can expect your security deposit after you’ve moved out of the apartment. Some landlords like to drag their feet and this won’t work in your favor.

— Send a report to Calgary’s local housing office if you feel the landlord is refusing you out of ethnicity or sexual preferences.

Finding an apartment in Calgary is easy if you know what you’re doing right from the beginning. With these tips, it should be a piece of cake. Calgary is a great place if you’re especially looking for cheap and affordable apartments for rent.

Czech pub food eating experiment resulted in lost weight, lower cholesterol

Friday, March 10, 2006

On February 8, the same day Super Size Me opened in Prague, a Czech film company’s volunteer known as Karel Gustav Bozan began a 1 month diet of Czech pub food and beer in a Czech version called “Super Spek Me”; which translates loosely as “Super Flab Me”.

Zuzana Pudilova of Aerofilms described the volunteer at that time: “He is a well-built man between 45 and 50. He is almost 2 metres tall, he is not exactly thin but until now he has had quite a healthy lifestyle.”

Karel ate typical Czech pub food for an entire month with three rules: no vegetables or fresh fruit (unless they came with a meal) no exercise, and lots of beer.

Karel’s menu consisted entirely of typical Czech dishes. Obesity therapist, Iva Malkova, had warned at the beginning of the project: “People in the Czech Republic eat much more fat, especially animal fat than is recommended.” Pub meals in the Czech Republic often consist of such fatty items as goose with dumplings or sausages.

Yesterday the results were announced; Karel lost six kilos, his cholesterol went down and so did his liver enzymes, triglyceride and uric acid levels. His blood pressure did not change. At his interview with Radio Prague he said: “I feel good, great! The food was varied and there were even enough greens in the garnish. As for beer, I tried to alternate brands but I always settled it with Pilsner. I liked the experiment, it was all paid for by the distributor, Aerofilms. I would do it again, maybe they will propose it to me!”

Zuzana Pudilova of Aerofilms said: “The result of the experiment is surprising – both for us and the experts who monitored it. The medical report says our volunteer has lost weight and his blood sugar has dropped. So we have come to the conclusion that fatty Czech pub grub is not all that bad for you – which I guess wasn’t meant to be the result of the experiment at all.”

Demonstrators protest Condoleezza Rice’s trip to Australia

Thursday, March 16, 2006

Anti-war demonstrators in Sydney, Australia on Thursday dubbed U.S. Secretary of State Dr Condoleezza Rice a “war criminal” and “murderer.” Two protesters were evicted and five people were arrested during protests against the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Dr Rice, on a three-day trip to Australia, said she understood why people found it hard to be positive about Iraq when all they saw on their television screens was violence.

Soon after Rice began her speech at the University of Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music, two protesters shouted from the rear of the auditorium, “Condoleezza Rice, you are a war criminal,” and “Iraqi blood is on your hands and you cannot wash that blood away.” Standing with their palms towards her, the young man and woman repeated their accusation until security intervened to remove them from the hall.

About 15 minutes into Rice’s address, a third protester appeared at a balcony door, interrupting her speech as she referred to freedom. “What kind of freedom are you talking about? You are a murderer,” said the demonstrator before he was quietly escorted from the hall. “I’m very glad to see that democracy is well and alive here at the university,” she said.

In her speech, Rice sought to justify the U.S. occupation of Iraq, describing Iraqis as now more free. One student asked about abuses committed by U.S. forces at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. She said the abuses had made her “sick to her stomach.” However, she defended Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where human rights groups say detainees are held in inhumane conditions and in detention flouting international laws.

Before Rice began her speech, about 50 protesters were gathered at the front gates of the Conservatorium. The group were confronted by police on horseback and by police dogs. Police used the horses to charge into the group of activists and push them back, as a police helicopter hovered.

A police spokeswoman said the group was blocking pedestrian access to the building and that police had spent more than 20 minutes warning them to move. The police then moved in and pushed the crowd back 20 metres. Police say five people have been charged with “hindering police in the execution of their duties.”

The “Stop the War Coalition” says Rice is a “war criminal” and is not welcome in Australia. The group’s spokeswoman, Anna Samson, says the protest is one of many planned in the lead-up to the third anniversary of the invasion and occupation of Iraq on March 20.

Paddy Gibson, from the University of Sydney’s Student’s Council, says the protest is in opposition to the Iraq war, and to the use of the University of Sydney’s campus to host Rice, “the most powerful woman in the world,” who they say is a war criminal. “They’re saying, ‘… you’ve got Sydney Uni’s support to stand up and peddle your murderous hate speeches,’ which is what we see it,” he said.

“You’ve got 180,000 people killed, as we said, for no other reason than strategic control of the region’s oil resources. And the anti-Muslim racism that’s been whipped up to justify this war is being felt by Sydney University students,” said Mr Gibson.

Photography By Means Of The Ages}

Photography By Means of The Ages

by

bassThese days photography could not be more different. In the movies, we utilized to be astonished when spies had cameras in their watches or the soles of their sneakers. But now it is typical for virtually absolutely everyone to have a camera in their mobile phone and to be in a position to pull it out and snap a photo virtually anyplace.Let fill in a few gaps. We can go back to the origins of the language to find that the word photography started in the Greek instances and it actually implies drawing with light. But the actual science of photography did not genuinely get off until the 1800’s in this nation when a fellow by the title of John Hershel utilized the phrases photography, positives and negatives to the activity of producing images. We had negatives of our pictures from then until the dawn of digital photography in the last couple of many years. For most of us, though, the company Eastman Kodak is almost certainly the one particular we associate most with the early developments of photography. And it was the early pioneer of photography, George Eastman that manufactured the very first developments on the primitive techniques becoming utilized till his operate in 1839. A tiny trivia? Eastman made the name Kodak up because he wanted his business name to begin with a K.The developments started to come along rather routinely as photography started to mature and turn out to be more sophisticated. Colour photography was designed in 1861 by a scientist named James Clark Maxwell. Up until then, all images have been black and white or monochrome. Color photography was a massive leap forward but it genuinely did not start off to move into the public arena until two brothers named Lumi&egravere in 1907 invented the color plate.More than the decades to comply with, photography moved forward steadily and moved out of the planet of science and then journalism and into each of our residences. But the revolution that has turned photography into what we know it to have nowadays occurred in 1981 when Sony invented the initial camera that worked without having film. The digital age was upon us.It was Kodak that yet again acquired the lead in the marketplace by obtaining the first digital camera out on the market in 1990 when they developed the Kodak DCS a hundred. As with all technology, early digital cameras had been large (by these days specifications) and a lot far more expensive than we are utilized to now. Innovation in the area of photography has continued to march practically as quick as people could keep up. When digital cameras have been presented that gave us a port to be able to download them to our personal computers, the internet explosion of imagery was fueled. Further development coming virtually every 12 months since 1990 incorporated the speedy and phenomenal expansion of memory in digital cameras along with the idea of swappable storage drives. This altered the way men and women took photos since now the quantity of photographs a person could take was virtually limitless. The growth of memory also gave developers the capability to add video capture to the same gadgets as have been utilized for photography so that practically anybody could become a cameraman with that tiny camera that could by this time match in their shirt pocket. Much of the excitement of world wide web websites like YouTube can be attributed to the capability of the regular citizen to take video anyplace, anytime and at no cost to them. The photography and video sector have had to do a whole lot of adjusting to discover how to service this marketplace that was altering at speeds unimaginable by George Eastman a century just before. The affordable availability of good quality color printers that enabled men and women to print their pictures at the property was a boon to the amateur camera buff but a blow to the photography business. But to their credit, the industry has kept up. But we can be positive that the developments are just acquiring underway. Who understands what new technical wizardry is ahead for the photography world. It is certain to be an exciting trip, no matter what the potential holds.

BDSM as business: An interview with the owners of a dungeon

Sunday, October 21, 2007

Torture proliferates American headlines today: whether its use is defensible in certain contexts and the morality of the practice. Wikinews reporter David Shankbone was curious about torture in American popular culture. This is the first of a two part series examining the BDSM business. This interview focuses on the owners of a dungeon, what they charge, what the clients are like and how they handle their needs.

When Shankbone rings the bell of “HC & Co.” he has no idea what to expect. A BDSM (Bondage Discipline Sadism Masochism) dungeon is a legal enterprise in New York City, and there are more than a few businesses that cater to a clientèle that wants an enema, a spanking, to be dressed like a baby or to wear women’s clothing. Shankbone went to find out what these businesses are like, who runs them, who works at them, and who frequents them. He spent three hours one night in what is considered one of the more upscale establishments in Manhattan, Rebecca’s Hidden Chamber, where according to The Village Voice, “you can take your girlfriend or wife, and have them treated with respect—unless they hope to be treated with something other than respect!”

When Shankbone arrived on the sixth floor of a midtown office building, the elevator opened up to a hallway where a smiling Rebecca greeted him. She is a beautiful forty-ish Long Island mother of three who is dressed in smart black pants and a black turtleneck that reaches up to her blond-streaked hair pulled back in a bushy ponytail. “Are you David Shankbone? We’re so excited to meet you!” she says, and leads him down the hall to a living room area with a sofa, a television playing an action-thriller, an open supply cabinet stocked with enema kits, and her husband Bill sitting at the computer trying to find where the re-release of Blade Runner is playing at the local theater. “I don’t like that movie,” says Rebecca.

Perhaps the most poignant moment came at the end of the night when Shankbone was waiting to be escorted out (to avoid running into a client). Rebecca came into the room and sat on the sofa. “You know, a lot of people out there would like to see me burn for what I do,” she says. Rebecca is a woman who has faced challenges in her life, and dealt with them the best she could given her circumstances. She sees herself as providing a service to people who have needs, no matter how debauched the outside world deems them. They sat talking mutual challenges they have faced and politics (she’s supporting Hillary); Rebecca reflected upon the irony that many of the people who supported the torture at Abu Ghraib would want her closed down. It was in this conversation that Shankbone saw that humanity can be found anywhere, including in places that appear on the surface to cater to the inhumanity some people in our society feel towards themselves, or others.

“The best way to describe it,” says Bill, “is if you had a kink, and you had a wife and you had two kids, and every time you had sex with your wife it just didn’t hit the nail on the head. What would you do about it? How would you handle it? You might go through life feeling unfulfilled. Or you might say, ‘No, my kink is I really need to dress in women’s clothing.’ We’re that outlet. We’re not the evil devil out here, plucking people off the street, keeping them chained up for days on end.”

George H. W. Bush to attend Sydney CEO conference

Correction — August 29, 2005 See Bush attendance at Australia CEO conference a hoax

Thursday, August 25, 2005

It was revealed today that George H. W. Bush will be attending the Forbes Global CEO Conference in Sydney next week. Mr. Bush is a wealthy businessman and member of Skull and Bones. He has also been President of the United States and the head of the CIA, and is the father of the current US President George W. Bush.

The conference will be held at the Sydney Opera House. The Forbes website says that at the event “senior figures from the world’s leading companies and institutions will discuss the best ways to nurture and capitalize on innovation and reveal the latest global trends.” Other attendees will be former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Australian Prime Minister John Howard, former NSW Premier Bob Carr and, controversially, Steve Forbes, president and chief executive officer of Forbes Inc, and one of the signers of the Statement of Principles of Project for the New American Century.

Mr Knobloch of the 30A network described the attendees as “a few hundred neo-conservative corporate chiefs”. An article written by James Goodman and hosted on the 30A network website alleges a connection between Mr Forbes, the Bush family, and the policies of the administration of George W. Bush.

“Ironically enough, Forbes now leads the charge in the US business world against the ‘Axis of Evil’ (which of course includes Iran). Backing the US ‘War on Terror’ to the hilt, Forbes is one of Bush’s key business sponsors. In January 2004 it proudly announced ‘Bush is Best’,” the article said.

The 30A network is organising a protest in Sydney to coincide with the conference. It is not yet known if the ASIO risk assessment for the event will change as a result of Mr Bush attending.

Answers To Frequently Asked Car Insurance Questions

By Joe R. Maldonado

Here are two of the more common car insurance questions answered:

‘What is taxable as far as car insurance?’

In general, any claim settlements made against your car insurance will not be taxable. However, you could receive payments for things like repairing or replacing your car, medical expenses or replacement services such as housekeeping or child care. These payments would be designed to give you compensation and restore you to the place where you were before the accident occurred. You cannot deduct the loss of your income though, because your insurance company will have already compensated you for this.

You may sometimes have to report a settlement as income, and this will be taxable. You should do this if you received anything above the amount needed to repair the damage. You would just report the excess. This is also true for settlements involving bodily injury and rehabilitation.

Always remain compliant with the IRS. Report what you receive, even when it isn’t taxable. Just make sure you report it as income.

Go ahead and get some help from a professional. You may have a unique situation that requires looking at. There may be different rules which apply to your situation.

Here is another one of the most commonly asked car insurance questions:

‘Does my credit rating affect the cost of my car insurance?’

The way in which you handle your bills does actually affect your car insurance premiums.

If you miss a few payments on your credit cards or any other bills your credit score will suffer. This can raise your insurance premiums by as much as 50%! Upon application, your credit gets evaluated by the insurance agency. They will use the information that they find to determine the rate of your insurance premium.

The whole idea here is that they hold a general belief that a person who is responsible with their money will also be a responsible driver. Insurance companies have had experience enough to know that this generally turns out to be the truth.

Many times those who hold an above average credit rating will also be the same people that install anti-theft devices on their cars as well as cautiously follow the rules of the road. These are also the people who will be the most likely to put on their seatbelts before hitting the road.

If you have a bad credit rating, you will be viewed as high risk. This does not just apply to the rules of the road. The insurance agencies also view you as someone who may end up filing an unnecessary claim or trying to quote a claim that is above your actual loss. This is why you have got to be meticulous when it comes to your credit score. Car insurance is not the only area of your life that this will affect. Be careful when it comes to making late payments on anything, and avoid bankruptcy and foreclosure at all costs.

These are just a couple of the frequently asked car insurance questions, and you can find the answers to many more of them with a simple online search.
