St. Anthony Foundation provides hope

Friday, September 23, 2005

On the corner of Golden Gate Ave. and Jones St. in the Tenderloin, San Francisco, right next to the Civic Center you can see a throng of low-income and homeless people lining up outside of St. Anthony’s Dining Room hall which opens up it’s doors everyday at 11:30 a.m. Volunteers dressed in St. Anthony Foundation shirts help keep the lines moving as hundreds of homeless and low income people shuffle their way towards the dining hall underneath the watchful eyes of a small statue of St. Francis of Assisi.

“There’s a lot of people who go hungry out here and it ain’t right.” says Jimmy Scott, a slightly brawny 44-year-old black man who has been living homeless in San Francisco for the past three years. “There are families out here with kids and everything and they have to walk around all night just to stay awake so they don’t get hurt or killed…Right here in the U.S. this is going on…it ain’t right.”

The dining hall, which has been open for the past 54 years, is owned by the St. Anthony Foundation which helps low income and homeless people and families in the Civic Center, Tenderloin, and SOMA areas with clothing, shelter, food, drug rehabilitation, and many other services. St. Anthony’s administrative offices are found at 121 Golden Gate Ave. with the majority of the foundation’s buildings on Golden Gate Ave. and Jones St.

“We are right in the heart of the homeless population of San Francisco,” says Barry Stenger, 55, who’s been working for the St. Anthony Foundation for one year, and is the Director of Development and Communications, “and people are pushed here because of the economic forces of San Francisco because it’s hard to be upper middle class in San Francisco.”

According to the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, “San Francisco’s cost of living remains one of the highest in the country” with the average household income in San Francisco being around $76,400 and the average price of housing being $543,000. Average household income for the United States in 2002, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, was $42,409 and the average price of housing for the United States according to the National Association of Realtors was $185,200 in 2004.

“We served our 32 millionth meal on Tuesday,” said Stenger, “and we serve 2,500 meals a day. Some of our people who work here actually get served [food] here because they spend all their money towards rent and medical costs.”

The St. Anthony Foundation was started by Fr. Alfred Boeddeker in 1950 one year after Fr. Boeddeker became pastor of St. Boniface church on Golden Gate St. where he was baptized as a child. During his lifetime, according to the foundation’s website, he was referred to as the “Patron St. of the Tenderloin” and had Boeddeker park named after him because of his, and his foundation’s, achievements with helping out the homeless and low income community.

“[St. Anthony’s] is a good thing,” said Jimmy Scott, “they provide a good service and they feed people and they clothe them and provide furniture when you get housing and give you groceries when you have AIDS. It’s a good little organization.”

“Our dining room is open 365 days a year.” Said Stenger. “Our other facilities are open seven days a week. We have a residence for senior women and our [free medical] clinic is open five days a week and we also have a furniture and clothing store. We have 12 programs all together.”

Some of those programs are the Father Alfred Center which provides 61 men two programs for getting out of drug and alcohol abuse, the Employment Program/Learning Center which helps participants in educational and employment opportunities and provides each one with a personal staff advisor, and a Senior Outreach and Support Services center which states its mission is to “promote independence, self determination, and alleviate isolation” for seniors who are 60 and older.

A few homeless people who were interviewed complained that St. Anthony’s had some staff who were rude and that they were kicked out of the dining hall; other homeless within the area refuted those claims saying St. Anthony’s has nice staff and only kicks people out who cause trouble.

“It’s a good place and good people. Everybody is so kind and so respectful and everything is under control.” Said John Henderson, a tall and skinny 57-year-old homeless black man who has only been living in San Francisco for close to two months because he recently moved there from Phoenix, Arizona. “It’s pretty cool because they’re under control because yesterday I saw at Glide [Memorial Church which also has services for the poor and low income] and they were handing out food boxes and people were just rushing in and the woman in charge there was freaking out and so she just sat down. That would never happen at St. Anthony’s.”

“And they clean too!” Henderson said laughing with a grin on his face referring to the fact that there are no drugs allowed in the premises. “Not that Glide ain’t clean if you know what I mean.”

“We [also] have a whole division that deals with justice education and advocacy to change the system that brings people to our doorstep.” Said Stenger. “We hear a lot of appreciation from the people we serve. We get a lot of testimony from our clients who have become clean and sober. Sometimes we have to push them a little to get them out the door because they love the [foundation] so much because it has changed their lives.”

Preventing Penis Skin Damage Avoiding And Reducing Stretch Marks}

Preventing Penis Skin Damage Avoiding and Reducing Stretch Marks

by

John Dugan

Stretch marks on any part of the body are rarely welcome, as people tend to find them unattractive and embarrassing; and when they occur on the penis, they can cause particular concern for men. While it is not always possible to stretch marks, understanding why they appear may help men to avoid penis skin damage as part of their penis care routine.

Causes of Stretch Marks

It is widely understood that stretch marks on any part of the body are caused by stretching and expansion of the skin; and this makes sense, because they tend to occur along with weight gain or muscle growth. Stretch marks are most common on the breasts, abdomen (most notoriously in pregnant women), biceps, legs, and penile skin. They often appear in individuals who have gained significant weight, whether through increased body fat, pregnancy, or added muscle mass during weight lifting.

There is more to the issue than simple weight gain, though; current research suggests that stretch marks are related to the so-called stress hormone cortisol. This hormone is present in increased levels in obese individuals, as it is formed, in part, in the adipose tissue (i.e., belly fat.). Weight lifters who use performance-enhancing preparations containing hormones may also be affected, as are pregnant women (with their fluctuating hormones) and adolescents (think puberty hormones).

Stretch marks are also highly common on the penile skin, where hormones are also involved, and where the tissue naturally stretches and contracts regularly during the formation and recession of erections.

Preventing and Treating Stretch Marks

When it comes to stretch marks and other types of skin blemishes, the best cure is almost always prevention. Stretch marks, in particular, are nearly impossible to erase entirely once they have already appeared, unless affected individuals are willing to undergo expensive laser treatments.

Therefore, the suggestions here are mainly aimed at helping to prevent penile stretch marks before they occur. It is important to keep in mind, though that there is unfortunately no guarantee that these will be 100% effective, due to the hormone-related factors involved.

1.Use a lube during masturbation or sex. Using a personal lubricant for any and all sexual contact with the penis can help to reduce the level of wear and tear incurred; a lubricant creates a barrier between the penile skin and any other surfaces, allowing the skin to glide rather than grab. Dont forget to reapply as the product wears off or is absorbed into the skin.

2.Go easy on the level of activity. Even with lube in place, friction can take its toll, especially with rough play. Using a gentle touch is a better option, at least as far as maintaining healthy, unblemished skin.

3.Use cortisone creams only under a doctors supervision, and only as directed. With their cortisol content, cortisone creams can be damaging to the elastin in the dermal tissue, and improper or excessive use can result in thinner, more brittle skin, as well as the appearance of striations or stress marks. While these medications have their place, they should not be used as a catch-all treatment for any type of skin eruptions. Instead, a doctor should be consulted as to the most effective treatment for a given skin condition, and cortisone creams should only be used as directed.

4.Use a high-quality moisturizer on a daily basis. Keeping the skin well moisturized can not only lessen the chances (to a degree) that stretch marks will occur; they can also help to minimize their appearance, which can be emphasized by tight, dry penis skin. Choose an emollient that is designed specifically for use on the penile skin, as hand and body lotions often contain ingredients that can cause irritation on the more delicate penile tissue. A penis health crme (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) that is enriched with Shea butter and vitamin E can help to soften the skin and lock in moisture; and a product that also contains vitamin A may also help to reduce visibility of striations on the skin.

2010 Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure becomes world’s largest Komen race

Saturday, June 12, 2010

The 2010 Susan G. Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure, held earlier today in St. Louis, Missouri, became the world’s largest Race for the Cure, with over 71,000 participants.

2010 marks the twelfth year for the race in St. Louis, which raises money for breast cancer research nationwide. Originally brought to the city in 1999, it has raised over US$19 million. It was sponsored by Wells Fargo Advisors, a locally-headquartered brokerage firm of the financial services provider Wells Fargo. Nationally, the Race for the Cure is hosted by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a non-profit organization supporting breast cancer research.

In 1999, there were only about 10,000 participants in the St. Louis Race for the Cure. In recent years, the number has grown to over 60,000, and today’s 5K race saw over 71,000 runners, walkers, and wheelchair racers. Despite the heat and humidity, 1,090 teams signed up, and over 4,500 breast cancer survivors participated. Overall, the race raised more than US$3.3 million. A phone bank set up by Wells Fargo and local television station KSDK contributed over US$28,000 of that amount in four hours.

Prior to the race, there was a parade of all the breast cancer survivors who had signed up for the race. The actual competition began at 8:30 a.m. CDT (1330 UTC) with the wheelchair race. Following them were the timed runners, the untimed runners, the walkers, and lastly, the “fun walk” participants, who had only opted to walk one mile (1.6 kilometres).

The Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure is only one of many Races for the Cure, which is the largest group of 5K runs and walks in the world. The first Komen race was held in 1983 in Dallas, Texas, but has since spread to over 140 cities throughout the world. Proceeds from today’s St. Louis race will benefit both local institutions and the rest of the United States. At least 25 percent of the money raised will go toward funding national research on breast cancer, while the rest will be given to organizations in St. Louis for breast cancer awareness programs.

President-elect of France, Nicolas Sarkozy was criticized for going on a luxury cruise in Malta with his family, right after winning the election on a platform that emphasized hard work.

“It sends a disastrous signal to the country, notably the 53 percent of French people who earn less than 800 euros a month and who voted for him,” said Patrick Menucci, former advisor to Ségolène Royal.

However, Sarkozy last week explained the reasons for taking what was supposed to an unpublicized retreat. He said he needed time to prepare himself for the heavy burden of state.

Attacks by Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) in Nigeria have reportedly forced Italian oil company Eni to shut down production of some 150 thousand barrels of oil per day.

“We intend to destroy between now and May 29 more pipes than we have destroyed in the last one year,” Jomo Gbomo (suspected to be a pseudonym), spokesperson for MEND, said in an e-mail.

Up to 25% of the usual production is said to have been lost last year.

Suicide bomb kills at least twenty in northwestern Pakistan

Sunday, April 19, 2009

Local police have reported that a suicide bomber has killed at least twenty people and injured a further thirteen after attacking a military convoy close to the tribal Orakzai region of northwestern Pakistan. The attack happened close to a checkpoint in the city of Kohat on Saturday.

The incident occurred at 16:10 local time (10:10 GMT). “The bomber was driving a pick-up truck which he rammed into a convoy passing by a security checkpost,” said senior police officer Fareed Khan. “At the moment, I can say at least 20 people, including soldiers and policemen, were killed.” He added that two civilians and eighteen security personnel were among the killed, and the number of casualties would possible increase, as seven of those wounded were in critical condition.

The explosion was powerful enough to have damaged ten vehicles of the army convoy, as well as a police van stationed near the post.

Yousuf Raza Gilani, the prime minister of Pakistan, denounced the attack, describing it as “cowardly act of terrorism”. He pledged that he would use an “iron hand” against insurgents.

A spokesman for Baitullah Mehsud, the chief of the Taliban, said by telephone to news agencies that rebels will continue to attack the security forces.

“It was retaliation for the US drone strikes and security forces will have to see more attacks because our people have suffered many losses in the missile attacks,” the spokesman stated.

Cricket Helps Find Right Phone Fit For You

By Nancy Corwin

While many cell phone companies are finding new ways to increase their income, usually by finding ways to add costs to their phone plans, one company is taking a different approach in lowering prices, doing away with contracts and growing their service areas to provide low cost cell phone service across the nation.

With many phone plans when you agree to keep that carrier for anywhere from one or two years you can have the phone for free, with Cricket plans, when you buy the phone the first month of service is free, but there is no contract to sign. No signed agreement to stick with the company for a year or more. The decision to leave will be yours, but when you can find a plan that offers unlimited calling, no long distance charges, no charge for information and no charge for text and picture messaging, the decision to leave may be a tough one to make.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyYsw-LZYxo[/youtube]

With many phone makes and models to choose from, finding one that fits your lifestyle should make the decision an easy one to make, and with no service contract it can usually be used on any other service to which you may decide to switch. However, when signing a contact with another company, there is usually a heft fee for ending the contract early. Even if some unfortunate circumstance makes the cell phone unaffordable, you still pay for the completion of the contract terms.

As Cricket continues to grow, becoming available in more parts of the country it is rapidly setting the standard for what is right with cell phone service plans. No contracts binding users for years, no additional charges for text messaging or sending the pictures from your camera phone and no long distance charges. With the plan prices it may be time to unplug your phone from the wall and instead count on this new wireless carrier for your communications needs.

When signing up for cell phone service many may not include all the extra charges into their budget and when the bill comes they learn they may not be able to afford the phone after all. With Cricket there are no surprises. You pick the phone of your choice, find the plan that will fit into your budget and enjoy unlimited nationwide calling and long distance. If someone in the household is trying for the title as fastest text messenger in the country, it will not send your budget into turmoil as Cricket plans comes with unlimited text service.

With discount pricing on a variety of popular phones and low cost service plans with no contract to sign, all with unlimited calling plans, Cricket is establishing new guidelines for cellular phone service.

CanadaVOTES: NDP candidate Jo-Anne Boulding in Parry Sound—Muskoka

Friday, October 10, 2008

In Wikinews’ attempt to speak with as many candidates as possible during the 2008 Canadian federal election, Wikinews has talked via email with Jo-Anne Boulding. Jo-Anne is a candidate in Ontario’s Parry Sound—Muskoka riding, running under the New Democratic Party (NDP) banner.

The riding’s Conservative incumbent is Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister for FedNor. Other candidates in the riding are Liberal Jamie McGarvey, Green Glen Hodgson, and independent David Rowland.

The following is an interview with Ms. Boulding, conducted via email, over a week ago.

She did not respond to two of the main questions: “Previous to this campaign, have you been politically involved? How will you apply your previous work/volunteer/life experience to serving your constituents?” and “What would you say are the three hottest topics this election, in your riding? What would you and your party do to address these issues?” Being unanswered, these questions were edited out of the interview, which otherwise is published as received.

Disease outbreak feared after mass hysteria over “sweet” water in Mumbai

Wednesday, August 23, 2006

“18 hours of mass hysteria” (according to the Sunday Times of India) broke out last Friday in Mumbai as hundreds of residents flocked to Mahim Creek, one of the most polluted creeks in India that receives thousands of tonnes of raw sewage and industrial waste every day after reports that the salt water had suddenly turned “sweet”.

Television reports showed people drinking water on the spot with their hands, and others bathing, apparently to wash away their sins with the “holy” water.

At the height of the hysteria, bottled mineral water was selling for Rs 50 (RM4.50), with people buying the mineral water simply for the bottles, pouring away the mineral water and filling the bottles with water from the creek.

News reports of the Mahim Creek incident sparked further mass hysteria at Gujarat within hours, with residents there claiming that seawater at Teethal beach in Valsad had also turned sweet. About 400 people had gathered by the beach in the evening.

In the aftermath of the incident, local authorities stated that they were being were extra vigilant because of the possibility of a severe outbreak of water-borne diseases, such as gastroenteritis as a result of so many people drinking contaminated water. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board had warned people not to drink the water, but despite this many people had collected it in bottles, even as plastic and rubbish had drifted by on the current. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai had ordered a bacteriological report into the “sweet” water, but suspected that “contamination in the water might have been reduced due to the waters from Mithi River flowing into the mouth of Mahim Bay“.

By Saturday morning, the hysteria had died down, as the taste of the water had returned to normal.

US President Obama celebrates his first Martin Luther King Jr. Day while in office

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

On Sunday, at a Bapist church originally founded by freed slaves, US President Barack Obama addressed the congregation about the “Dream” of slain civil rights activist Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—whom Obama credits with paving the way for his 2008 election—and about the importance of hope and faith in his own life.

On Monday, Obama, with his family in tow, served hot lunches at a local Washington soup kitchen—one of several ways America’s first black president planned to pay tribute to the late Dr. King on the federal holiday that honors his legacy and lasting impact upon society.

Later at the White House, Obama will host a gathering consisting of small selected group of African-American seniors and their grandchildren where they will discuss the meaning of the civil rights movement and how it still effects them to this day. Following which, that evening, the Obamas are slated to attend the “Let Freedom Ring” concert at the Kennedy Center. A musical event that will feature gospel artists and choir members from various area churches among other houses of worship.

Another prominent American politician, governor-elect of New Jersey, Chris Christie held a banquet on Monday evening to honor the importance of Dr. King’s message as well. Other commemorations included a march in Seattle where participants rallied for issues in the African-American community.
