US Federal Reserve raises interest rate from 5% to 5.25%

Thursday, June 29, 2006

The United States Federal Reserve has announced an increase of 25 basis points (0.25%) in the federal funds rate bringing it to 5.25 percent. It also announced its approval of a 25 basis point increase in the discount rate to 6.25 percent.

The federal funds rate is the interest rate at which depository institutions such as banks lend balances they maintain at the Federal Reserve (called federal funds) to other banks overnight. The discount rate is the interest rate that an eligible bank is charged to borrow short term funds directly from the central bank through the discount window.

In its statement, the Fed said that growth is moderating from its quite strong pace earlier in the year, which it partly attributed to a cooling of the housing market and the delayed effect of increases in interest rates and energy prices. The Fed noted that inflation measures were “elevated” in recent months and that while productivity gains have held down increases in labor costs and inflation expectations “remain contained”. However, it pointed out that high levels of resource utilization and high energy and commodity prices have the potential to sustain inflation pressures.

In its outlook over its future moves, the Fed statement said “Although the moderation in the growth of aggregate demand should help to limit inflation pressures over time, the Committee judges that some inflation risks remain. The extent and timing of any additional firming that may be needed to address these risks will depend on the evolution of the outlook for both inflation and economic growth, as implied by incoming information.”

Scottish Midlothian car crash kills three

Monday, December 24, 2012

Two cars have been involved in a road traffic accident in the Scottish Lothian and Borders region, causing three fatalities and sending three to hospital. The incident occurred on the A68 road approximately 1.5 miles south of the Midlothian village of Pathhead when a Škoda Octavia and a Nissan Note travelling in opposite directions collided at approximately 0730 UTC today.

The Nissan, which was carrying five occupants, overturned and came to rest on its roof. Three male Buddhist monks who sat in the back of the car died at the site of the crash. The female driver of the vehicle managed to get out of the vehicle herself but another male passenger in the front of the car had to be cut free by fire service members. The two front-seat passengers as well as the male driver of the Škoda were hospitalised at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, although none of their injuries are considered likely to be fatal.

“This is a tragic incident,” Inspector Simon Bradshaw of Lothian and Borders Police said, “and we are currently in the process of carrying out inquiries in order to establish the full circumstances of the collision.” The A68 road close to the location of the accident was temporarily closed to allow police to investigate the incident, with traffic redirected to the B6370 road via the town of Gorebridge. The road has since reopened.

What To Do If You Lose A Tooth

By Patrick Boswell

While losing a tooth is a rite-of-passage for many kids, complete with an under-the-pillow monetary gift from the all-important tooth fairy, losing a tooth for an adult can be a stressful and upsetting situation. There are many, many reasons for losing a tooth ranging from an accident to poor tooth help.

Regardless of the how or why, a missing tooth can be a bother for you. Maybe you can’t chew properly or speak properly because of the missing tooth. Perhaps you are concerned with how you look because of missing teeth and you find you don’t smile as often as you’d like. You avoid having your picture taken and talking to someone else can be an uncomfortable situation.

Fortunately, if you are missing teeth it is not an impossible situation and your smile can be saved! You can have the missing tooth or teeth replaced with a variety of solutions, depending on your situation and your dentist’s recommendations.

If you are missing any teeth at all, you will first need to schedule a visit to your dentist. He or she can examine the rest of your mouth – teeth and gums – and let you know if any of your other teeth are unhealthy. The sooner you can visit your dentist the better in case you have any other teeth that may be unhealthy and at risk for breaking.

If you are nervous about seeing your dentist, be sure to let them know when you are making your visit. Your first initial consultation and visit may just be to examine your teeth and gums to determine what treatment plan your dentist will suggest. You may not have any cosmetic work done on this visit. You can ask your dentist to explain what he or she is doing every step of the way if you are feeling anxious. They will let you know that they are just taking an x-ray picture, or if they are just cleaning buildup off of your tooth.

Your dentist will examine the area of the missing tooth. They will probably take a look at the condition of the teeth on either side of the space where your tooth used to be. It will be important that these teeth are healthy as well. Your dentist may decide to care for your natural teeth before replacing a missing tooth. If your doctor recommends a bridge – a tooth fixture which is held in place by surrounding teeth – then your dentist will want to make sure these teeth are strong enough to hold the bridge in place.

As with any procedure, you can talk to your dentist about any questions you may have. Discuss all of your options including insurance coverage, cost and length or frequency of visits. Some procedures may require only one visit while others may require more. If you have anxiety about any dental procedure, ask your dentist what options are available for your comfort.

Tooth loss can be prevented with healthy habits of brushing and flossing as well as regular check-ups and visits to your dentist. It’s never to late to have a healthy and beautiful smile and your dentist can help you get one! The next time someone gets out their camera, you can smile big for the picture.

Australian health workers to close intensive care units in Victoria next week

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Members of Australia’s Health Services Union (HSU) will go on strike in Victoria next week in a dispute over stalled wage and career structure negotiations. Over 5000 physiotherapists, speech pathologists and radiation therapists will walk off the job next week, effectively closing the state’s 68 largest health services.

The strike will force the closure of intensive care units and emergency departments across the state.

It is feared the strike could continue into Easter.

National secretary of the HSU, Kathy Jackson said admissions would be crippled, while intensive care patients would have to be evacuated to New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia as hospitals will not be able to perform tests or administer treatment.

“When an ambulance shows up you can’t admit a patient without an X-ray being available, you can’t intubate them and you can’t operate on them,” she said.

“If something goes wrong in an ICU you need to be able to X-ray, use nuclear medicine or any diagnostic procedure,” said Ms Jackson.

Ms Jackson said the HSU offered arbitration last year, but the state government refused. “They’re not interested in settling disputes, they hope that we are just going to go away.”

“We’re not going away, we’ve gone back and balloted the whole public health workforce in Victoria, those ballots were successful, 97 percent approval rating,” she said.

The HSU is urging the government to commence serious negotiations to resolve the dispute before industrial action commenced.

The government has offered the union a 3.25 per cent pay increase, in line with other public sector workers but the union has demanded more, but stopped short of specifying a figure.

Victorian Premier John Brumby said the claim would be settled according to the government’s wages policy. “The Government is always willing and wanting to sit down and negotiate with the relevant organisations . . . we have a wages policy based around an increase of 3.25 per cent and, above that, productivity offset,” he told parliament.

The union claims it is also arguing against a lack of career structure, which has caused many professionals to leave the health service. Ms Jackson said wages and career structures in Victoria were behind other states.

Victorian Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said he was not in support of the proposed strike and called on the government to meet with unions. “There could not be a more serious threat to our health system than has been announced today.”

“We now have to do whatever is possible to stop this strike from proceeding,” he said.

The opposition leader will meet with the union at 11:30 AM today.

Victorian Hospitals Industry Association industrial relations services manager Simon Chant said hospitals were looking at the possible impact and warned that patients may have to be evacuated interstate if the strike goes ahead.

Getting Fiber Cable Ready For Termination Or Splicing}

Getting Fiber cable ready for termination or Splicing

by

Bentley JamesI recently watched my co-worker disassembling a computer only using one tool. Was it the right tool for the work? It depends. It had been the tool he had… it worked, however, there is surely more than a single tool out there that could have made the chore easier with fusion splicer.

This situation is surely the one that many fiber optic installers know all too well. Being a gentle reminder, just how many of you have used your Splicer’s Tool Package (cable blade/scissors) to eliminate jacketing or even slit a buffer pipe and then use the scissors to hack away at the Kevlar? Did you nick the wine glass? Did you inadvertently trim through the wine glass and have to start over?

Appropriately splicing and terminating Fiber cable requires special tools and techniques. Training is important and there are many excellent resources of training available. Usually do not mix your electronic tools with your fibers tools. Utilize the right tool for the work! Being experienced in fiber work can be progressively necessary as the value of data transmitting speeds, fibers to the house and fibre to the idea deployments keep on increasing.

Many factors set fiber installations other than traditional electrical projects. Fiber optic glass is very delicate; it’s nominal outer diameter is 125um. The slightest scratch, symbol or even speck of mud will impact the transmitting of light, degrading the indication. Basic safety is important because you will work with goblet that can sliver into your skin layer without having to be seen by the eye. Transmission level lasers are incredibly dangerous, and require that protecting eyewear is crucial. This industry has generally been dealing with voice and data grade circuits that may tolerate some interruption or decelerate of signal. The individual speaking would do it again themselves, or the info would retransmit. Today we are dealing with IPTV indicators and customers who’ll not tolerate pixelization, or momentary locking of the picture. All the situations talked about are cause for the client to consider another carrier. Each situation might have been averted if proper attention was presented with to the techniques used while preparing, installing, and maintaining fiber optic cables and OTDR.

That being said, we will review basic fiber preparation? Jacket Strippers are used to remove the 1.6 – 3.0mm PVC exterior coat on simplex and duplex fibre wires. Serrated Kevlar Cutters will cut and reduce the kevlar strength member directly beneath the jacket and Buffer Strippers will take away the acrylate (buffer) finish from the bare glass. A protective plastic coating is put on the bare dietary fiber after the pulling pro cess, but prior to spooling. The most frequent finish is a UV-cured acrylate, which is applied in two tiers, producing a nominal outside size of 250um for the layered fiber.

WWE wrestler John Cena undergoes neck surgery after injury

Thursday, August 28, 2008

The Stamford, Connecticut-based company World Wrestling Entertainment issued a press release last night, stating that wrestling performer John Cena is expected to recover from his injuries, after a surgery.

WWE Medical Program head, described in a press release as a “renowned neurosurgeon” Dr. Joseph Maroon performed the operation on Cena, after he sustained injuries during the SummerSlam match on Sunday August 24. He suffered a herniated disc in his neck, in a lost match against a wrestler named Batista.

Just hours after surgery, he visited the locker room of the SmackDown/ECW taping, commenting to the WWE website that: “I feel great. Dr. Maroon is fantastic. He explained every possible procedure he could and could not perform, and the potential risks of all of them. I explained to Dr. Maroon not only my immediate goals, but also my long-term goals. He took them all into consideration and recommended the most commonplace procedure with the least amount of side effects.”

While the option of fusion surgery was chosen previously by other WWE wrestlers (Edge, Steve Austin, Chris Benoit), Maroon removed a fragment from Cena’s spinal cord, which had been blocking a nerve.

The operation lasted 90 minutes; recovery is expected to take three months, instead of a previously suggested 12-14 months.

In his WWE career, Cena is a three-time WWE Champion, a three-time United States Champion, and a two-time World Tag Team Champion. He also won the 2008 Royal Rumble. Before being promoted to the main WWE roster, Cena trained in and wrestled for Ultimate Pro Wrestling and Ohio Valley Wrestling, holding the top titles of both promotions.
