UK drivers urged not to panic buy during delivery strikes

Friday, June 13, 2008

British drivers have been urged not to panic buy fuel because of the 4-day walkout by delivery drivers working for companies delivering to Shell petrol stations. The 600 workers have walked out over pay disagreements, wanting an increase to their current pay of £36,500, however their union Unite turned down a last-minute offer of £41,500.

Hoyer UK, which employs tanker drivers for Shell, said, “We extended our offer to the very limits that our business could sustain.” However Unite said in a press release that, “this dispute could have been resolved if Shell had advanced a fraction of the billions of pounds in profit they make every month”, continuing to say, “one of the world’s richest companies is prepared to play Pontius Pilate and see the British public inconvenienced rather than settle this dispute for a sum smaller than the chairman’s pay increase last year”

Shell admitted that the walkout could leave some of its 1,000 forecourts without fuel, but the UK Petrol Industry Association, which represent oil refiners, said that forecourts would have around 4 days of supply, maintaining usual stocking levels. Shell also commented that the strike impact would be “significant”, as the company runs around 1 in 10 of all petrol stations in the UK.

British Business Secretary, John Hutton, said that “the strike, which will have a disproportionate effect on people in Britain, cannot be justified,” and urged both sides to resume negotiations in order to settle the dispute. “We have been working closely with industry to put in place detailed contingency plans to reduce as far as possible the disruption for the driving public,” he added. Unite’s press release also confirms that “provision has been made for fire, police and the emergency services.”

Tanker drivers on strike have set up picket lines at many of Shell’s UK refineries, including those in Stanlow, Avonmouth, Plymouth, Pembroke, Cardiff, Kingsbury, Basildon, Grangemouth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Jarrow and Luton Airport.

Wikinews interviews U.S. Libertarian presidential candidate James Burns

Saturday, February 23, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with James Burns, one of the candidates for the Libertarian Party nomination for the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

Burns, the former chairman of the Nevada Libertarian Party, was asked if he thinks he has a good shot at winning the Libertarian nomination and ultimately the presidency. He replied, “My chances of winning are not all in my hands. I shall do my best, but it comes down to what others will do. What will you do?”

When asked about America’s shrinking middle class he said, “The economic policies of the US government are the cause our troubles. When I am President, the only economic policy I shall pursue is to be frugal with the funds of the United States.”

Burns believes that the President “is not ‘the leader of the free world,’ rather….a person who attempts to protect our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Explosion, steam eruption near Grand Central Terminal in New York City

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

A pipe has burst in New York City, the largest city in the United States, causing a generator to explode. The explosion occurred in Midtown Manhattan near Grand Central Terminal (GCT) and the Chrysler Building, and approximately at the intersection of 41st Street and Lexington Avenue. Nearby buildings have been evacuated, and a large area has been blocked off. There are reports of a very large crater at the scene.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has officially ruled out terrorism. Grand Central Station was quickly evacuated soon after the incident. Subway lines 4, 5 and 6 have no service in both directions between the 125th Street Station and the Bowling Green Station. 42nd Street Shuttle service has been shut completely.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) received a call at 5:56 p.m. EDT (UTC-4) reporting an explosion. More than 170 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Witnesses reported that buildings in the nearby area shook. This was a five-alarm response.

At least 20 people have been reported injured, and one woman, Lois Baumerich, died from a heart attack. Two people are currently in critical condition.

There are potentially harmful materials at the scene of the explosion and HAZMAT crews are on the scene to clean up debris. There are reports that pipes were wrapped in asbestos, but the air is being tested, and results should be available late Wednesday night.

ConEdison Workers are on the scene as well, and it appears that they are working nearby.

Emergency workers are reporting that the situation is not under control. They are still unable to confirm why the pipe exploded due to the inaccessible nature of the scene at the source of the explosion. The pressure of steam has subsided and the air appears to have cleared, revealing the crater. Disruption of electricity in the surrounding area is minimal.

GCT is reported to be reopened at this time. An area was cordoned off and people trapped in the vicinity due to fears of asbestos pollution resulting from the explosion.

According to a press conference with the mayor, the pipe involved was built in 1924, and a likely cause of the eruption and explosion was cold water leaking into the pipe, possibly from rain or from a water pipe. A tow truck had fallen into the crater left by the explosion, and the explosion also shattered glass on nearby buildings.

Nicaragua’s Ortega visits Imam Khamenei in Iran

Sunday, June 10, 2007

In Iran on Sunday, Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega met Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei where both leaders criticised American “imperialism” and shared the opinion that the United States government is “hated” and “isolated”. “The Bush administration is now the most disgraced government,” Mehr News Agency quoted Khamenei.

Ortega stated that that the current United States administration is embroiled “in Iraq and Afghanistan and has lost the support of its own nation. Under such circumstances, unity among anti-American nations is essential.”

Ortega had said that he was going to travel to Iran on a jet lent to him by the Islamic socialist Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi.

Khamenei and Ortega seemed very much in tune in terms of their opposition to the United States coupled with the belief in the necessity of cultivating the relations of anti-American nations to create “a fair international political system”—as Khamenei put it—and establish a new world order to supplant “capitalism and imperialism”—as Ortega couched it.

Prior to visiting Imam Khamenei, Daniel Ortega met with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad whereat they concurred with regard to the antithetical position of Iran and Nicaragua towards the United States.

Ortega’s visit to Iran came as a surprise to Washington. This is in light to the Islamic Republic’s staunch opposition to socialism and Marxism. However, Ortega said he did not have to seek permission to court the Islamic Republic.

Iran’s morality police crack down on un-Islamic dress

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

The Iranian police forces have faced criticism from Ayatollah Hashemi Shahrudi, the head of the judiciary who was appointed by Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for their re-invigorated campaign to do away with un-Islamic dress.

Ayatollah Shahroudi proclaimed, “Tough measures on social problems will backfire and have counter-productive effects.” Others have, of course, made it clear that un-Islamic dress can lead to moral corruption, engender innumerable vices, and hurt the Islamic character of the nation.

Some believe that no one had any issue with the creation of an Islamic atmosphere. The core of the matter revolves around the implementation of the Islamic dress code; additionally, heavy-handed measures should be shunned. For instance, Mehdi Ahmadi, information head of Tehran’s police, told Al Jazeera: “Some citizens may complain about the way the law is being enforced but they all agree with the plan itself.”

According to one student, “You simply can’t tell people what to wear. They don’t understand that use of force only brings hatred towards them, not love.” Nevertheless, Hojatoll-Islam Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, Iran’s interior minister who is in charge of policing, prognosticated positive feedback from the populace when he said, “People are unhappy with the social and moral status of the society. They expect that the fight against social insecurity be properly implemented.” Thus, Hujjat al-Islam Pour-Mohammadi re-iterated the necessity of proper implementation and methodology towards the restoration of morality in the Islamic Republic. Islamic officials and religious people affirm that this is indispensable to promote righteousness, curb sin, and bring open sinners to justice.

Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, hijab became mandatory in Iran for every woman including foreigners after over 98% of citizens voted for an Islamic government. Women may face caning up to 74 strokes for failing to observe hijab. In this recent crackdown, the authorities have arrested many citizens throughout the country. Not only have women been taken into custody for their hair being uncovered on their foreheads and tight clothes that show body shapes, For men they need to cover from knee to their waist as according to Sharia. Even a foreign journalist was detained because the photograph on her press card was indecent.

It has not been clear whence the directive for the re-newed clampdown emanated. Some have blamed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while Gholam Hossein Elham, the government spokesman, stated to reporters, “The police work as agents of the judiciary to confront crimes. The government as an executive body does not interfere in the affairs of the judiciary.” The following pre-election speech seems to corroborate this latter statement:

In reality, is the problem of our people the shape of the hair of our children? Let our children arrange their hair any way they wish. It doesn’t concern me and you. Let you and me overhaul the basic problems of the nation. The government should fix the economy of the nation and improve its atmosphere…[It should] better psychological security and support the people. People have variegated tastes. As if now the arch obstacle of our nation is the arrangement of our kids’ hair and the government disallowing them <He chuckles>. Is this the government’s responsibility? Is this the people’s merit? In actuality, this is the denigration of our people. Why do you underestimate and belittle the people? It is the real issue of our nation that one of our daughters donned a certain dress? Is this the issue of our nation and the problem of our nation?

Increase Manhood Sensitivity For A Faster Pleasure Finish}

Submitted by: J Dugan

For as long as individuals have been getting it on, there have been those who want to get it on in public. Social taboos keep that from becoming the norm; however, there are some ways a man can fulfill this fantasy without putting himself at legal risk. To begin, a man who intends to unleash his inner exhibitionist should practice excellent male organ care before doing the deed. Why? Because an increase in member sensitivity can be a necessity in order to get off fast this is one of the major rules of attempting coupling in public.

Rules for coupling in public

Keep in mind that coupling on a downtown street is not something most people would recommend, simply for the potential legal and social ramifications of the act. However, there are some ways to make it happen without the possibility of handcuffs (at least not real ones!).

1. Choose an underpopulated place. For most people, the idea of getting caught it hot but the act of actually getting caught is definitely not. The savvy exhibitionist would never choose to do it on a bench on a city street in the middle of the day! But perhaps a quick romp in the backyard after the neighbors are in bed or in the shadows of the parking garage after a late night at work might be an option.

2. Choose an opportune time. As mentioned earlier, the middle of the day is a no-go. After choosing the right place, focus on the right time, which is usually going to be under the cover of night. Remember, again, its the prospect of getting caught thats hot, so go with a time during which most people are sound asleep.

3. Wear appropriate clothing. This is definitely a key point to intimacy in public. The last thing anyone wants to do is get completely bare to do the deed, which is why clothing should be chosen very carefully. For the man, a pair of pants that open easily and can slip down the hips but dont have to be pushed all the way down is good, as is a flowing, full skirt for the ladies.

4. Make it fast. The fun is in the furtiveness of getting away with something wrong so make sure it is done fast. In order to ensure this, a man should take care to increase manhood sensitivity in any way he can before the main event. Be prepared to stop in mid-fun if discovery is imminent.

5. Cover the sensual tracks. Again, remember that coupling in public should only be attempted if the coast seems to be reasonably clear. For instance, a quickie in the car might work, or getting it on behind a locked office door can fulfill the fantasy. To add another layer of protection, have a good excuse for looking flustered or unkempt after the event, just in case someone asks what was going on in there.

Increase manhood sensitivity for the main event

Again, it is very important to remember that depending upon where the deed is done, coupling in public might be considered a crime. Never, ever do anything that might lead to getting locked up. Remember that great intimacy in public doesnt actually mean performing the act in front of other people it simply means adding the thrill of potentially getting caught. A man can do that quite easily on his own front porch, for instance, under the cover of night, and be much safer than doing it outside a downtown restaurant.

No matter where a man chooses to indulge his exhibitionist side, its a good idea to ensure the male organ is ready and raring to go and that means striving for increased manhood sensitivity. In addition to letting a few days pass without a release or engaging in prolonged foreplay to get that hair-trigger feeling, a man should also use a high-quality member health creme (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil, which is clinically proven mild and safe for skin). Look specifically for a creme that contains vitamin C and L-arginine, both of which are known for increasing manhood sensitivity. A high-end emollient such as Shea butter can also help with soothing excited member skin.

Creekstone Farms sues USDA for refusing to allow mad cow testing

Monday, March 27, 2006

Creekstone Farms Premium Beef, an organic meatpacking company based in Arkansas City, Kansas, filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for what the company claims is threats by the USDA that it would face prosecution if it proceeds with plans to test nearly 100% of its beef for Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease or BSE.

The USDA position is that allowing any meatpacking company to test every cow would undermine the agency’s official position, a position that holds to random testing as a scientifically adequate measure to assure safety. It also claims that 100% testing does not ensure food safety because the disease is difficult to detect in younger animals.

The USDA currently tests about 1% of cattle slaughtered in the U.S. The USDA’s objection is believed to be the result of pressure from larger meatpacking operations. In 2004, the president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association told the Washington Post that “If testing is allowed at Creekstone, we think it would become the international standard and the domestic standard, too.” Creekstone Farms says tests cost about $20 per animal, increasing the cost of beef by about 10 cents per pound.

Jindal signs Intelligent Design law

Saturday, June 28, 2008

Louisiana Republican Governor Bobby Jindal signed a controversial bill hailed by intelligent design supporters, such as the Discovery Institute, and Louisiana Family Forum, a creationist group. Critics of the bill, including several major science organizations, say it allows for the teaching of “creationism” in public schools.

The law, Louisiana Science Education Act, allows teachers to use “supplemental materials” when discussing evolution, but it does not state what the materials would be.

Citing the 1987 Supreme Court ruling in Edwards v. Aguillard, “Louisiana has a long and unfortunate history of trying to substitute dogma for science in classrooms,” said Reverend Barry W. Lynn, an executive director for Americans United for Separation of Church and State. In addition, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, National Center for Science Education, and the Louisiana Coalition for Science opposed the bill arguing it would cause detriment to students’ education by letting in unapproved curriculum.

According to Reuters, Jindal’s office declined to comment on Friday.

Similar Academic Freedom bills have been promoted by the Discovery Institute in other states, but so far they have failed.
