What You Need To Know When Traveling To Abilene, Texas

By John Parks

Located in the heart of Texas, Abilene is charming and progressive city of 120,000 people which carries the nickname, “the Friendly Frontier,” a homage to the Western heritage of the area. Abilene was founded in the 1880s as cattle shipping site on the Texas and Pacific railway, but grew steadily over the years to become a mid-size metropolitan area offering many cultural and educational opportunities for residents and visitors.

Abilene has several festivals each year which highlight the frontier history of Abilene, including the Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup, which is held the second weekend of March; the Western Heritage Classic Rodeo held on the second weekend in June; the West Texas Rodeo, which begins the Friday after Labor Day, and the Spirit of the Frontier Festival, which occurs on the first Saturday in October each year. Some of the interesting sites to visit include the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, which features numerous historical buildings, a reenactment of frontier life in the late 1800s, as well as exhibits featuring numerous Indian artifacts and frontier rifles. For those visitors who have an interest in military history, the nearby Fort Phantom Hill offers the ruins of an 1851 Army post for tourists to explore. Frontier Texas is a museum dedicated to the early history of Abilene and features interactive exhibits which give visitors the opportunity to experience simulated buffalo stampedes, Wild West shootouts and prairie thunderstorms.

Other interesting attractions include the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, the Abilene Zoo, the Abilene Children’s Museum, the Paramount Theatre, and the 12th Armored Division Military Museum. Abilene is also home to the Dyess Air Force Base, which is the area’s largest employer, and it also has an aviation museum that is open for tours. For those visitors interested in the performing arts, Abilene also has a well respected orchestra and ballet company.

In addition to having the highest rated public school system in Texas, and the 17th highest rated school system in the United States, Abilene is also home to several institutions of higher learning including, Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons University, McMurray University, and the Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy.

The average home price as of October 2008, was $168,000, which will buy a comfortable 3 bedroom family home and is an excellent value for the money compared to other similar sized cities across the Southwest and South. In addition, there are many luxury homes available in the Abilene real estate market priced from $500,000 to $1,500,000.

Overall, Abilene is a community that is rich in heritage, but progressing into a 21st century city that is large enough to offer a wide range of interesting attractions and educational opportunities, but small enough to retain its unique identity.

Weapons storage facility in Syria explodes killing 15 soldiers

Thursday, July 26, 2007

A military weapons storage facility in al-Masalmyiah, just north of Aleppo, Syria has exploded, killing at least 15 Syrian soldiers and injuring at least 50 others. The explosion occurred on the grounds of a military academy’s infantry school where weapons and ammunition are stored.

The blast, which occurred at 4:30 a.m. EEST (UTC+3) is believed to have been caused by excessive summer temperatures, but other reports suggest that a gas leak may have sparked the blast. The incident is reported to not be terrorism related.

“[The blast was] not the result of sabotage. There is a heat wave and temperatures reached close to 50 degrees (Celsius) [Nearly 115 (Fahrenheit)], which caused an ammunition dump to explode,” said an unnamed Syrian official.

Firefighters report several deaths and injuries, but also said that the fires caused by the blast have been extinguished.

Their resignations were accepted by Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh and, in one of two Royal Decrees, King Abdullah II. According to multiple reports, the second decree ratified Deputy Prime Minister for Local Administration Tawfiq Kreishan to run the Ministry of the Interior and State Minister for Legal Affairs Ahmad Ziadat to run the Ministry of Justice.

A recent surge in new infections by variants of the coronavirus has led to at least 4627 deaths and over 300 thousand cases in the nation of ten million, Reuters reported. Officials attribute it to Jordanians not obeying the restrictions, and have arrested dozens for breaching stay-at-home orders; hundreds of businesses have also been closed, Reuters further added in the report.

Queensland state Premier announces March 24 election date

Thursday, January 26, 2012

Queensland’s premier Anna Bligh has announced the state is to hold its elections on Saturday, March 24; however, in an unusual move, she did not advise the governor to issue the writs for the election.

“I intend to call the 2012 State election for Saturday the 24th of March,” said Bligh, Leader of the incumbent Australian Labor Party.

Local government elections, originally scheduled for March 31, will now be scheduled for late April.

“Why are 73 local government elections around Queensland being pushed back? That adds more months of uncertainty when she has had a year to separate out the two elections,” said Leader of the Liberal National Party, Campbell Newman. Newman will have to win the seat of Ashgrove if he is to become premier.

The two major parties are expected to face some strong competition in a number of seats from the Greens, the recently formed Katter’s Australian Party, and independent candidates.

“There is undeniably a strong mood to change the government, but voters should not feel forced into giving up on their progressive views or their desire for some long-term vision and a more principled approach to politics,” said Greens lead candidate Adam Stone who is contesting the Mt Coot-tha seat.

The election process is expected to formally get underway on February 19 when the premier expects to advise the governor to issue the required writs.

UK drivers urged not to panic buy during delivery strikes

Friday, June 13, 2008

British drivers have been urged not to panic buy fuel because of the 4-day walkout by delivery drivers working for companies delivering to Shell petrol stations. The 600 workers have walked out over pay disagreements, wanting an increase to their current pay of £36,500, however their union Unite turned down a last-minute offer of £41,500.

Hoyer UK, which employs tanker drivers for Shell, said, “We extended our offer to the very limits that our business could sustain.” However Unite said in a press release that, “this dispute could have been resolved if Shell had advanced a fraction of the billions of pounds in profit they make every month”, continuing to say, “one of the world’s richest companies is prepared to play Pontius Pilate and see the British public inconvenienced rather than settle this dispute for a sum smaller than the chairman’s pay increase last year”

Shell admitted that the walkout could leave some of its 1,000 forecourts without fuel, but the UK Petrol Industry Association, which represent oil refiners, said that forecourts would have around 4 days of supply, maintaining usual stocking levels. Shell also commented that the strike impact would be “significant”, as the company runs around 1 in 10 of all petrol stations in the UK.

British Business Secretary, John Hutton, said that “the strike, which will have a disproportionate effect on people in Britain, cannot be justified,” and urged both sides to resume negotiations in order to settle the dispute. “We have been working closely with industry to put in place detailed contingency plans to reduce as far as possible the disruption for the driving public,” he added. Unite’s press release also confirms that “provision has been made for fire, police and the emergency services.”

Tanker drivers on strike have set up picket lines at many of Shell’s UK refineries, including those in Stanlow, Avonmouth, Plymouth, Pembroke, Cardiff, Kingsbury, Basildon, Grangemouth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Jarrow and Luton Airport.
