Marussia F1 test driver Maria de Villota seriously injured in testing accident

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

The Marussia F1 team’s test driver, Spaniard María de Villota, was taken to hospital by air ambulance today after a collision in testing at Duxford Aerodrome.

At the end of her first installation run, the car she was driving had a low-speed collision with the loading ramp of the team’s support truck. According to BBC Cambridgeshire presenter Chris Mann, the car “suddenly accelerated” into the rear of the vehicle. The Marussia team released a statement an hour and a half after the accident, stating that she had been transferred to hospital, and a further statement would be issued once her condition had been assessed.

A spokesman for the East of England ambulance service, Gary Sanderson, said de Villota had “[…] sustained life-threatening injuries and following treatment at the scene by paramedics, she has been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further care.” According to witnesses, she was motionless for about fifteen minutes as medical teams attended to her, but did move her hands before being taken away from the test track. Medical charity Magpas, whose volunteer paramedics attended the accident, reported she had sustained injuries to her head and face, and was in a ‘stable condition’ when she reached the hospital.

Marussia reported her as conscious later in the afternoon: “Since Maria’s arrival at the hospital at approximately 10.45am this morning, she has been receiving the best medical attention possible at the hospital, which is the region’s major trauma centre. Maria is conscious and medical assessments are ongoing. The team will await the outcome of these assessments before providing further comment. The team’s first priority at this time is Maria and her family.”

De Villota was announced as Marussia’s test driver in March, having prior experience driving for Alan Docking Racing in Superleague Formula in Spain.

Common Signals For Roof Repairs

By Tim McLoughlin

Your grass needs landscaping when it gets too tall. Your house needs paint when it looks dingy. Your windows need to be replaced if they show cracks. With some household repairs, when to tackle the task is obvious. Your roof, however, is a bit more subtle. How do you know when it’s time to reroof?

Inspections are key. It’s extremely important to inspect your roof at least twice a year, in order to prevent any unseen damage from becoming a disaster. Regular inspections will also help you to quickly recognize anything that seems different or odd about your roof. There are some basic things you can look out for that will tell you whether you have a happy, healthy roof, or whether you need to call in a roofing company for a roof repair.

Grab your binoculars, and find a good spot on your property where you have a clear, unobstructed view of the roof. Here’s what you’ll look out for:

Missing or broken shingles are an obvious sign of a problem. Empty spots could allow moisture to collect and puddle, eventually soaking through and becoming a leak. Don’t hesitate to have a roofing company come and check out potential leaks, as they’ll only get worse with time. Steep roofs tend to lose more shingles due to high winds.

Bare looking shingles (often darker looking than normal) are not good either. Grainy asphalt covers new shingles, but can be swept away by heavy winds and rain. If you notice quite a bit of the grainy asphalt in your rain gutters, something’s wrong and you may need some roofing repairs. Naked shingles are a source of another potential leak on your roof.

Shingles that appear to have curled or split are another sign that it may be time to reroof. If shingles are curling, they’re likely to be further damaged by heavy winds, leaving room for water to seep inside. Shingles can curl either upwards or downwards (causing a bump on their bottom edge) – either way, it’s a sign of trouble.

Any distortion in the shingles, such as a buckled vertical line, can indicate a problem. There are several causes of buckling, including using boards that are too thin when constructing the roof. Sagging centers or ridges can also be signals that it’s time to consider reroofing.

Pay special attention to any area where one surface meets another, such as near chimneys, vents, or wall joints. If you notice any cracks, dried out caulking or rusty metal, there’s a problem with the flashing. Again, this is a potential leak that may be cause for roofing repair.

Loose or exposed nails are not normal, and can also create space for leaks to sneak through.

There are also several important things to check for from inside the house:

If you notice any sagging between your rafters, it could mean that your roof decking will need replacing, along with other possible roof repairs.

Water damage is the most obvious sign that reroofing is in your future, and could indicate an existing leak or be a sign of inadequate roof ventilation. Check your attic after a rainy day to be sure there are no stains or wet spots from previously unseen leaks.

Depending on the climate you live in, the color of your roof, what direction your roof faces, and what kind of ventilation was built in, roofs can last anywhere from 10-25 years. Consistent roof inspections will help you know when it’s time to call a roofing company for roof repairs.

Ukrainian former official admits to murdering journalist

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

A former official from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine has confessed to involvement in the abduction and murder of journalist Georgiy R. Gongadze in 2000. Olexiy Pukach has also implicated other officials in the crime.

Gongadze criticised the government of then-President Leonid Kuchma. On September 16, 2000, he was abducted and his decapitated remains were found two weeks later near Kiev. Kuchma’s opponents described the slaying as political, and there was widespread controversy on national and international levels.

Olexiy Pukach, who was apprehended on Tuesday, told officials his involvement with the case was “direct” and has gone on to give a full confession. Prosecutors believe he strangled Gongadze himself after three officials from the police—convicted of murder last year—brought Gongadze to Pukach.

According to Vassyl Grytsak of the Security Service of Ukraine, Pukach has also offered to take authorities to the location of the journalists head, which was never recovered.

He also said to arresting officers that “I have been waiting for you since the beginning.” Kuchma himself is alleged to be directly involved, as a series of tapes totaling over 700 hours have been leaked after they were allegedly made in secret by one of his bodyguards; the evidence has been ruled inadmissible by a parliamentary commission that failed to prove or disprove their authenticity. Kuchma denies any involvement.

Government shuts off water to California farms in controversial effort to help threatened species

Thursday, August 13, 2009

A farming town in California claims that it may disappear due to the United States federal government shutting off water pumps, though the government states the actions are necessary to save several marine species.

In July 2009, action by the Federal Bureau of Reclamation to protect threatened fish stopped irrigation pumping to parts of the California Central Valley causing canals leading into Huron, California and the surrounding areas and the farms that rely on them to lose their primary irrigation source. Unemployment has reached 40% in some areas as the farms have dried up.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger stated the action is putting the fish “above the needs of millions of Californians.”

Highlighting the city’s plight, Huron Police Chief Frank Steenport stated, “A year from now, [Huron] may not be here.”

In an interview in Huron on Tuesday, comedian Paul Rodriguez, whose mother owns a farm in the area, criticized the actions of the government and called for President Barack Obama to review the decision. “This used to be an almond orchard. Now all that is left is firewood.”

Laura King Moon, assistant general manager of the State Water Contractors, a nonprofit association of 27 public agencies from across California that purchase water from the government under contract, said “these cuts are crippling on our people and businesses — especially in the Central Valley where farmers are being forced to fallow their land and workers are being laid off. Rather than piecemeal restrictions, we need to balance the needs of the environment and the needs of people with a collective plan for the Delta.”

The National Marine Fisheries Service, an agency within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, states the water pumping inside central California threatens several species, including Chinook salmon, Central Valley steelhead, North American green sturgeon, and Southern Resident killer whales, which rely on Chinook salmon runs for food. In the Huron area, the delta smelt is specifically targeted.

In defense of the actions, Rod McInnis, the southwest regional director for NOAA’s Fisheries Service stated, “What is at stake here is not just the survival of species but the health of entire ecosystems and the economies that depend on them. We are ready to work with our federal and state partners, farmers and residents to find solutions that benefit the economy, environment and Central Valley families.”

The Benefits Of Scrapping Your Vehicle

Of course, cars get old, they break and sometimes they get destroyed in accidents. When you buy a new car, you want it to last as long as possible as you have probably invested a lot of money in it.

If you have an old car and your car is no longer able to be on the road, or there are other problems with your older car that it quickly becomes inefficient to try to keep them running, and sooner or later, you find it taking up space as it sits unused in your driveway. Apart from these problems it probably becomes a drag on your life and your finances also.

In that case you should start thinking about getting it scrapped by a professional company. There are many benefits to doing this including the fact that you will get some extra money for doing so and on top of simply not having to repair the car anymore that it will have quite a big impact on the environment.

In this article, we are going to talk you through the benefits of doing this, so make sure to keep reading if you are interested inscrapping your car.

Here are the top benefits of scrapping the car-

 • Eco- Friendly

Simply sending the car to a regular dump wastes means you are indirectly helping the environment. When your car is scrapped, there are a lot of parts in the average car that can be reused and recycled. On the other hand, if you scrap the car, all of those reusable parts stay in use. That means there is less of a need for more metal to be created in the future. Also helps keep the environment healthier and dangerous chemicals out of the landfill.

Whenever new metal is made, greenhouse gases are emitted, contributing to global warming. Your scrapped car could be used to make something else, can be used in other cars, in other metal objects, and even in consumer electronics. Make sure to try out scrapping your car if you want to make your mark on the environment.

 • Extra Cash

If you are running low on cash, then it might be time to finally get rid of that old car that you can’t use anymore. Although you might have lost your initial investment that you put in the car, you will be essentially getting money for a piece of junk. When you scrap a car, most places will pay you upfront in cash. It’s one of the quickest turnarounds in money for property out there.

On top of this, You’ll get more money depending on the make and model so make sure to get a few different quotes before committing. so, you don’t have to worry about trading cars in. You don’t need to fuss with selling the car. Just scrap it, get your payment for the car, and move on.

 • More Space in Your Garage

How long have you been trying to get rid of that old used car that sits in your garage? It might be time to accept the fact that no one is going to buy it off you and you should try scrapping it. Yes, removing that hunk of junk from your driveway or your yard will free up a lot of room.

Once you do eventually get your car scrapped, you’ll find that space can be used for a new car, for other storage, or simply left available as open space. ofcourse, you will be happy with your decision. On top of this, you’ll have some money to go towards buying a new car.

 • Saves Energy

If you want to help to save the amount of energy that is used when manufacturing metal, you should think about scrapping your car. When the metal is made from recycled metal you could be seeing as much as 92 per cent of energy saved for aluminium. When copper is made, 90 percent of energy is saved and the figures stand at 56 per cent for steel. Make sure to consider this if you are thinking about scrapping your car and need that extra push to help the environment.

 • No More Maintenance Charges

The final benefit of scrapping your car is regarding the economic benefits that the recycling industry will see. This is because it is a lot easier and therefore cost-effective to recycle metal rather than mining ore. The reason being, you only need to melt and reshape metal rather than do the smelting and minor. When the recycling industry is able to save money on this, they are able to spend money on other things such as the wages of workers or even reducing taxes. The economic benefits might not affect you directly, but you definitely will see them.

Final Thoughts-Now that you know about the benefits of scrapping your car, you should consider this If you are thinking about scrapping your car, you should make the call as soon as possible.

Getting rid of an old car can be a simple process. If you want to get your vehicle off of your hands in Mumbai, you can scrap it with Aslam Salim Motorwala. Give us a call to get your junk vehicle removed on the spot for cash!

Sirius CEO visits congress

Friday, March 2, 2007

Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin appeared before a newly formed Antitrust Task Force, a sub-committee of the House Judiciary Committee, on Wednesday last week in Washington, D.C. to defend the proposed U.S. merger between XM and Sirius satellite radio services.

The hearing, carried live on C-SPAN, was attended by representatives from various competing broadcast companies. The representatives challenged the merger deal, and some speakers were openly hostile to Karmazin and to satellite radio in general, while other speakers were more civil.

Several times during the debate, the discussion centered on the failed merger deal between the two satellite television networks DirecTV and Echostar. The comparison between this proposed radio merger and the failed television merger was settled to some extent with an understanding that nearly all television viewers now use either cable or satellite to view available programming. Televised programming content is now delivered mainly in the form of a subscription, rather than airwave transmissions.

Unlike television programming, most radio listeners use over the air receivers to listen to free programming content supported advertisers.

“We come to this hearing with an open mind, but we recognize that the companies have the obligation to convince the Congress, the regulators, and most importantly, the American People that this combination will improve the competitive playing field and benefit consumers,” said John Conyers, the sub-committee chairman. To determine the legality of this merger, Congress first needs to decide whether a combined XM and Sirius would be a monopoly, as the only satellite radio provider in the United States, or whether the new company will actually be in competition with other forms of radio-like entertainment, according to Conyers. The hearing focused on alternatives such as Internet radio, terrestrial radio, portable audio devices, and emerging services, such as cell phone services and WiMax.

Medical Marijuana: The Federal Response

Obviously, the medical marijuana laws exist in individual states only and there are no federal laws allowing the use and production of cannabis for medicinal purposes. In fact, federal laws prohibiting possession, sale and production of Cannabis are in direct conflict with many of the various state laws that allow the medicinal use of prescription pot.Until recently, the actual federal response to state medical marijuana rules was an unknown, but after a memo came out of the U.S. Justice Department on October 9th, 2009 from Attorney General Eric Holder, the federal government’s position has become a little less opaque. The memo outlines how federal resources throughout the fifty states should continue to focus on fighting organized narcotics trafficking, however, it also states that resources shouldn’t be wasted on individuals that are in clear compliance with local county and state rules regarding medical marijuana. This position received additional justification after massive budget shortfalls in law enforcement occurred across the nation. The Justice Department memo also discusses how criminal organization may be masked as legal operations for the production of medicinal cannabis and these organizations should be sought out with a few guidelines in mind. If a potential suspect or group of suspects is in possession of illegal firearms or uses them illegally in combination with growing cannabis, the government may also initiate an investigation. If a group of suspects is producing cannabis while perpetrating violence, selling to minors, producing or selling other illegal substances or working for organized crime they will be pursued, investigated and prosecuted by the government. In addition, when production of cannabis by an individual or group of people exceeds state limits on weight harvested or mature plants present at a particular grow site, then they can expect government investigation and prosecution as well. Evidence of money laundering or possession of more cash flow than possible under proper compliance with state rules could be grounds for investigation too.The memo from Attorney General Eric Holder clearly outlines the government’s intentions. If you are a legitimate medical marijuana patient that complies with all state and county laws regarding the possession and production of cannabis you have nothing to fear from authorities. If you try to hide behind them that were passed to help people with serious illnesses not have limits in their medication choices and perpetrate crimes while doing so, you will be investigated and prosecuted under statutes.
